    Re: What kind of Mandolin

I suspect there are times when the outter E and G tuner buttons (knobs closest to the nut) don't quite clear each other?

    Re: Parchment Farm Blues

Might as well go back a few hundred years to the origin of what are now called "mondegreens"...

HA! I'd never heard this one before:

  3. Re: Trying to ID an UNMARKED "A" Style Mando - 3" thick?

What's the scale length, being the vibrating portion of the strings from nut to bridge (approx.)? Mandolin is often 13 7/8", short being 13", sometimes 14.5" or so.

    Re: Parchment Farm Blues

FWIW, Parchman Farm, the jail or "work farm" (as in chain gangs), is fairly iconic in the history of the blues, regardless of any song title. If some big star got the name wrong, it's probably...
  5. Re: Cheap beater mandolins that play, for leaving in the car etc?

FWIW, my own sunny summer "instrument in car" experience:

If the instrument is well-wrapped in blankets or other insulation, maybe stuffed under duffel bags, AND away from direct sunlight, it will...
  6. Re: Epiphone Mandobird VIII bridge question

    Just a heads-up:
Some like to maintain a consistent spacing in between the strings/courses, meaning that such center-to-center measurement increases as the string gauge increases. That may be less...

Re: Is my truss rod broken?

Not exactly: It’s going to have whatever natural relief it has when the nut is loose =and= the strings are putting tension on the neck. Parker's question of "did you tune up to check your relief?"...

Re: Some Rescue Intruments in Iowa

Whoa!! Maybe the nicely char-broiled fiddle that resulted from Jim's, ya know, rehearsing for Woodstock? Or maybe that Mr. Devil played down in Georgia vs. Mr. Daniels? Or maybe ... I should just...

    Re: Unknown Mandolin

Unfortunately, the inherent quality of his instruments can be marginal at best; over the years, many here have documented their issues. About 10 years ago, I got to see a beautiful "F-style" guitar...

Re: Trying to identify an old pick

Not that I have a clue =other than looking somewhat like the highly rounded Dawg pick= but there seem to be some characteristics that might trigger others' attention:

    - The three "points" each...
  12. Re: Unwanted string noises with mandolin and mandola

Yet one more reason for playing with others: We tend to not hear those unintended sounds!

Additional good news: While YOU might hear your mistakes, the other folks probably won't.

    Thinking...
  13. Re: Looking for a tuner that saves my sweetened tunings.

IMHO, "sweetened" means modifying a known tuning by miniscule amounts, to get either a known few =or= the widest possible set of scales & chords to sound good together. OTOH, "altered" tunings bring...
  14. Re: Recommendations for a tenor to hold lower tunings

It may not be clear, to the few w/ such experience, what your actual concern is. "Holding a tuning" sounds like "staying in tune" while, I suspect, that you're asking what guitar's body, given...

Sorry to open the floodgates of "name that picker", but the Geezinslaws led to this clip, again not very well dated. But hey, there IS a mandolin! I'll start with the obvious Glen Campbell and...

    Re: Old clipping

So J.B., ya got me thinking that there are a bunch of names that could be relevant but not recognizeable to the younger-than-us folks around here.

Re: New Player - Kentucky KM-150 vs KM-250?

You seem to be assuming that the KM-250 won't need a set-up? That would be an additional $100, less or more, depending on quality of work, your location, etc.

    BTW, virtually all factory-built...

  21. Re: I have no idea what it is, but it aint a mandolin

My initial guess was that, being wood (possibly integral to the neck), someone lubricated or "preserved" it with some oil that attracted the local rodents, maybe?

    Re: Gibson Mandolin Bass

The one I'm caretaking for my mandolin orchestra was bought maybe 12-20 years ago -well before my time- for around $6K; not sure if that includes the hefty shipping charge from the midwest. $4K -...
  23. Re: Dead Sounding Strings - Do I have a bridge issue?

Yeah but... The main reason that cheap mandolins are, ya know, cheap is because nobody has put the last hour or two of fine handcraft into it. If they had, the same body would have a higher model...
