I just put on the set as recommended by Weber, and am pleased. The OM seems more alive. I think I'll skip trying the J72s as I don't want to "load test" a thousand plus dollar instrument.

I finally broke down and called Weber, I guess they're not big on email. I was told that they now have a new recommended set of strings for the 20" Sages: GHS 13, 24, 34, 46. I asked about the .049...
Fantastic thread.
I'm not a folklorist or historian, but I guess that these songs have their roots in illiterate (pre-literate?) oral traditions where a moral lesson and a vicarious thrill of the...
Weber ships the 20" Sage OM with the same strings as the 23.5", but notes on their Facebook page that it could benefit from a heavier strings, especially on the lower end. They give no further...
I started out splitting 50/50 when I was limited to my 23 1/2 inch scale octave, but now that I have a 20 inch scale Weber Sage, I play it exclusively, thinking about selling the mandolin!!!!!!!!
Disclaimer: I had never heard of Steve Earle before this thread.
Now I've watched the YouTubes, and read the lyrics and I kind of like him. It seems to me that the thing about him that both...
rgray, you are absolutely correct!
Really nice!
Hi Pete:
Before fitting the Almuse MB8 I had previously fitted half an EMG P-Bass pickup. At that time I replaced the smaller original screws with the larger ones that came with the EMG. This...
Very very cool!
I just bought a new Sweet Pea a few weeks ago. The quality is top-notch, the tone is tinny as has been noted. If you are going for tone, I think you need to look at one of the other alternatives...
Sorry for duplicate post.
I wanted to close the loop on this thread, I ended up ordering a new Sweet Pea from Elderly, they had free shipping so I saved a little bit! The used one one on Ebay had two owners and went for...
My motivation is more based on limited lockable storage space at work, where I want to keep it for lunchtime practice. But for travel, I'd like to be able to put it into my checked in luggage, so...
Thanks for both replies. Are Sweet Peas a frequent item on Ebay? I never look there since I'd rather deal with the Cafe community on a used item.

I haven't seen any Weber Sweet Peas in the classifieds. Is this because few people have them, or because people tend to hang onto them? I'm thinking about getting one, but used ones for sale seem...

I just finished installing my new Mandobird pickup from Almuse, and agree, it is terrific. What I've been looking for for a long time. You won't be sorry.
The strings they ship with the Mandobird are horrible, too. Changing strings will make a big difference.
I just ordered one. Thanks for the info. Can't wait.
I'm just down the road and plan on attending. It sounds like a great time.
Do what I did, buy an 8 string Mandobird and string it with only 4 strings when you want to crank out the real electric sound. Otherwise, with no effects and a clean sound you can get the 8 string...
I hope this is the right forum. Can anyone suggest a good luthier near Winchester, VA or Frederick, MD for a setup?
Thanks in advance.
My wife showed me on p. 44 of the September 2009 issue of "O" magazine, 2/3 of a page on "Belles of Bluegrass", with photos and blurbs on Rhonda and Sarah, plus the Lovell sisters and the Darlins:...
I am now using J72's on my 23" Don Kawalek kit OM, and they sound great. Maybe I'm pushing the envelope, but the sound is worth it. Huge difference from the standard OM guages recommended for this...
