    Re: Shure sm57

As you can see, this can get as complicated as you want it to get.
Keep it simple and get a 57. It'll get plenty of use, even if you get something fancier later.
  2. Re: Mandolin playing mindset vs guitar playing mindset

What helped me starting on mandolin after 30+ years as a guitar player was just abandoning most things I knew, and thinking of it like a fretted fiddle.

Different left hand position. Not freaking...

  4. Re: What is the difference between a trill and a hammer-on?

I just remembered I keep forgetting to mention that the opposite - perhaps more correctly, the complement - of a hammer-on is the pull-off. It's sort of a means of discovering a lower note than the...

Re: Thile using an SM57 mic

Industry standard for many years; touring bands used to specify them 'cause they knew what they were getting.

I've pretty much switched to condenser mics now, but there's nothing finicky about...

    Re: Whaat is this chord?

I think the only context is that he just likes the sound of the chord, moving from that Dm. So we can name it whatever but there is a bit of sweetness to be heard moving from Dm to Dmb6. The most...

    Re: Whaat is this chord?

What is the context? Is this a solo mandolin thing...no other instruments?

If there are other instruments LOWER than a mandolin, it could be any number chords, depending on what you hear as...

Re: Always use a strap? Even when seated?

I not only always use a strap when playing, mine always stays on my mandolin even when it's in the case. Guess it might as well be considered part of the instrument, for my purposes.
  9. Re: Is this a chord? first fret, D AND A, then G&E on 3rd fret?

    Yar. It's the 2002 open D chord up a fret => Eb

When trying to sort out a chord pattern, figure out the notes being played and then what chord contains those notes.
  10. Re: Is this a chord? first fret, D AND A, then G&E on 3rd fret?

Bottom to top, your notes would be Bb, Eb, Bb, G. Looks like Eb major.

Re: Always use a strap? Even when seated?

What you want is your mandolin to be in the same place relative to your body sitting or standing. Using a strap makes this easier to achieve. R/

Re: Key of the song based on the melody

Minor is a mode. I think that is probably useful to most musicians to understand that.

There is a lot to learn with modes. Not all of it will be useful to all people.

Re: Key of the song based on the melody

A mixolydian is NOT in the "key of D", it just happens to use the same set of notes. The key signature does NOT tell you what key something is in, it just tells you the default notes to use.

    A key...

Re: Key of the song based on the melody

I agree, it is A mixolydian, which has the same key signature as D major. I have great trouble identifying a mode by hearing it. Especially mixolydian, which I get wrong all the time. But certainly,...

These bass notes generally indicate some sort of motion from chord to chord in a string of chords. Arguably the most common of such motions is the "walk down." Think of what is going on in songs like...

    Re: Chord Questions

Usually that means D chord with a C bass, and G chord with a B bass.

If I saw that in a song, I would try playing the D like this: 545x, which ends up being a D7 chord. That notation means: 5th...
