  2. Re: Identification of Gibson Mandolin-Guitar

That really does not look like a Gibson. Closer to a Harmony.

    Also what is a mandolin-guitar?

    Re: 10 string mandolin builder

I still love my Old Wave 10-string. It's mandola length, but I'm fine with the fel of the E string.

Truly a work of art! And I bet the sound is amazing too.

  8. Re: Brittany Haas and Chris Thile: “Crow Molly”/“Ship in the Clou

As I rule I DO buy everything Chris records and I've never been disappointed. So much diversity in his playing...from my favorite Bach recordings to stunning Punch Brothers originals! Such an amazing...

I'm pretty sure they played that at UConn when they played on April 24th.

Re: Mike Marshall or Sharon Gilchrist?

I recommend Matt Flinner's courses. You get a live lesson once a week with a live review, and you can watch the recorded sessions to practice with. He provides backing tracks and is very responsive...

    Re: Gibson

I would vote for three bursts R9, R8, and R0, then Goldtop, black Custom, and P-90 junior. Skip the LP studios for a few years...must be thousands of them out there for sale on the used market.
  16. Re: "The Greatest Mandolin Performance Ever"

Yes..sounds like we were at the same show. I've tried playing some of those pieces afterwards and I can't make them sound musical...can't get them up to speed.

  17. Re: "The Greatest Mandolin Performance Ever"

For me it's between two performances I saw live:

Chris Thile performing Bach solo in Albany, NY. We were front row solo and Chris was playing his Loar only a few feet from us. I don't think I'll...
  18. Re: Phish Festival Jams (specifically Dick's in CO)

I was more of a Deadhead back in the day, but I saw Phish a lot (and for free) in the early days before they were big. It's what we did when the Dead weren't touring.

Some time later I scored free...
  19. Re: Red Diamond Feature in latest issue of Fretboard Journal

    I love FJ.

However I sent in a correction to the Red Diamond article for the statement that A-styles and F-styles sound "vastly different", but I haven't sen a response from Jason yet.

    Re: The Brentrup Mandolin Registry

You have a good feel for the market and, of course, experience with the instruments. I think the only place double-digits will happen are Brentrup F5C models (Loar specs), F-hole mandolas, and...

    Re: The Brentrup Mandolin Registry

Like any mandolin it depends on the model, condition, tone, and playability. But in general prices went down along with the US economy, but they have been steadily climbing back up again. I think...
