    Re: Refretting

I used to think and say, guitar repair isn't rocket science: but after having to undo or redo numerous inept, bungled 'repairs', I began to think, ...maybe it is rocket science!
  3. Re: 1914 gibson H1 mandola sagging top, and bowed neck

    A few clarifications:
The top brace is not loose(it has been reglued previously).
My plan to remove the fingerboard & plane the neckshaft is to correct excessive neck upbow, not a low bridge, or...
  4. 1914 gibson H1 mandola sagging top, and bowed neck

I have this one on my bench for a repair estimate. Attached are photos, but the quality is poor, as the sag is difficult to catch, in a photo(but easy to see with the naked eye). I've been doing some...

    Re: Refretting

As important as the tools, and the helpful guidance from the previous posts, I suggest first practicing on several instruments that are not your favorites, and/or valuable.

    Re: Wood identity question

Yes, I believe it's stained maple, and it looks like bird's eye. Burl would not, I think, be suitable for instrument building.

Re: Help Identify This Old Gibson I Bought

I second rcc56's suggestion of the Dampit brand or type(Humitron is another). In my repair work, I have had to repair the damage caused by other types(Oasis 'bag' suspended in the strings, and the...
  8. Re: A question for luthiers - from a non-luthier

I do feel, or believe, that my perception, of how well an instrument plays, can be affected by the quality of it's sound. I have several vintage Epiphone acoustic archtops, on all of which I've done...

Re: 1957 EM200 disintegration of tuner buttons

If the originals don't work well(are not smooth turning: have excessive gear lash), I'm all for replacing them. However, if they do work well, then replace the buttons(as I did on a '57 Fender...

Re: Installing K&K Twin With Hide Glue

Pops1, just curious, what caused you to remove a dozen of the K&K p/us?
  11. Re: Seeking vintage tenor guitar neck for a project

That would be guitar scale: looking for tenor scale, 23".
  12. Re: Seeking vintage tenor guitar neck for a project

Jim, that is one fine restoration...or resurrection. Well, mine's not at the top of my to-do list yet, so I've got some time for looking.
  13. Re: Seeking vintage tenor guitar neck for a project

If i can actually find a vintage neck, I can probably modify the neck dovetail, or mortise in the body.
I've seen the $600 wreck on eBay: for that price, and in that condition, I'd make one. There...

    Re: Delmores Tenor Tuning?

I discovered the Delmore Bros recordings, by chance, back in the 70's, love their tunes and playing. Saw this post, because now I'm looking to replace the '30 Gibson TG0 I sold several years ago, and...

Re: My aquisitions since one year ago

Nice collection, something for every mood. Being particularly fond of acoustic archtops, I'll ask: does the early L-48 have a solid spruce top?

Re: What is it? UK auction.

I love instruments like this: someone had the skill to craft it, reusing a ‘40’s(from the logo)Gibson neck. I’d love to know how it sounds. Did it sell?

    Re: Which bridge?

Cumberland makes a great bridge, I’ve installed them for customers. On my own ‘21 Gibson A, to save a few dollars, I installed the Stewmac bridge. It works just fine.

    Re: Satin-nickel plating?

While I used a certain Tennessee company for the nickel replating of my '34 Epiphone tailpiece, I was not happy with the result. The plater sanded the worn, but original surface quite heavily,...

  23. Re: iPad app, for mandolin, similar to IRealPro?

    Thanks, I'll check that out.
  24. iPad app, for mandolin, similar to IRealPro?

I'm hoping there's an app, that shows mandolin chords, especially those used for jazz tunes(like the feature, that shows guitar chords, on IRealPro). Any suggestions?
  25. Re: Heads up! Nitrocellulose products dwindling

Not to quibble, but it was Bertrand Russell who wrote "Change is inevitable, but progress is problematic'.
