Re: Overcoming halted progress and frustration

Playing it slowly is the obvious solution. The trick is to make "slowly" seem like the right tempo. Think Reggae or give it a heavy backbeat. Make it groove at a slow bluesy tempo. Overdo the swing...

Or one string at a time.

Re: Help on counting this phrase

This is a weird transcription. My copy of the sheet music has the first eighth-note as a pickup, then the barline. The groups of quarter-note triplets actually starts at the beginning of the measure....
  4. Re: D'Addario Micro Headstock vs Micro Clip Free tuners

Nobody has mentioned the extra weight of a clip-on tuner on the headstock. I've never liked leaving a tuner (and/or capo on guitar) on while I play. I tune up and then take it off to play.

    Re: Thoughts on tremolo

That depends upon the speed of the quarter notes. Tremolo is fast repetition, the actual speed is variable.

    Re: Linda Lou my Gibson

"Down on the Farm" was my first thought when I saw the original post.

    Re: Bacon banjo-Mandolin

So, use extra-light mandolin strings. You don't waste the extra length, and they are probably cheaper. That is what I use on mine, which I play on a weekly basis at an Irish session.

Re: How do you like your armrests (aesthetically)

I wear a belt with a wooden buckle, so it doesn't scratch the instrument. I wear the belt so my pants don't fall down.

    Re: A real "tiny guitar"

I would call this a six-string baritone ukulele.
  10. Re: Curiosity --- anyone ever try using a Dunlop Jazz III pick?

I use the Dunlap Jazztone large round tip 207 for all of my mandolin family of instruments.
  11. Re: Does Pick Size and Instrument Size have any Correlation?

I use the same Dunlap Jazztone large round tip 207 on all my mandolin family instruments, no matter what the size (mandolin, mandola, mandocello, banjolin). I use the original Golden Gate on my...

    Re: Arpeggios

Arpeggios are just playing a chord one note at a time. Mandolins do it just the same as other instruments.

The first seven notes of the Star-spangled Banner are an arpeggio.

    Re: Little help? Henderson's Recordame

The relative major of Cm is Eb, not Ab.

    Re: musical notation question

"Tie" is the correct term, not "bow".
  15. Re: Is it true that Frank Wakefield can talk backwards?

Steve Goodman has a great song called "Talk Backwards", where he reverses the order of the letters. I highly recommend it.

    Re: Playing in Position

We need more information. Every instance is different. Positions shift often.

Re: I just got given this....

I use ultra-light mandolin strings on my banjolin. The ultra-lights bring out the "banjo" part of the sound. Heavier strings make it sound more like a mandolin, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Re: Double Time vs. Half Time

Changing the rhythm that you are playing doesn't necessarily change the rhythm of the song. The melody can play fast or slow notes while the accompaniment stays the same. I think to use the term...

Re: Double Time vs. Half Time

What you are doing is not double-time or half-time. You are not changing the rhythm of the song. You end up playing more notes in between the beats, but you have not changed the rhythm or beat of the...

    Re: Self-taught vs. …not!

I have been told by many adult students that one of the big draws of lessons is the pressure they feel to practice and learn, since they are committing time and money.

Re: Second chord in Old Home Place

The B or B7 (in G) is a secondary dominant if it leads to the Em (vi). If it slides up to the C, it is called a "chromatic lower neighbor". That's quite a mouthful, but it's a cool chord.

    Re: Classical music recommendations

Remember that you don't have to limit yourself to music written for mandolin. Violin and flute music can work fine.

    Re: Self-taught vs. …not!

One of the most important aspects of a live teacher is their ears: listening to you play and knowing what things to change to help you improve. I never had any lessons on mandolin or guitar, but I...

    Re: Changing strings

Piano strings don't get oils on them and more important: they don't get dents from being pushed against the frets.
