Do you know if it is a Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3? That would affect the price. I would suggest calling someone like Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto California who does consignments of...
I love them, but note these:
* they are very expensive (as with any strings it is kind of a crap shoot so I put off trying them for years but glad i finally did, but YMMV)
* they are thicker...
How do those Aussie woods compare to traditional tonewoods?
Since you are coming from a violin I would recommend a 20" scale OM with Thomastik-Infeld 174M strings. That is how I have my F20 Bitterroot setup and it is very warm sounding and rings like a bell...
I still own it! Not interested in selling, sorry.
You would finger the solo the same way you've been doing it, except now everything is relative to the capo fret not the bridge, hence the capo position is "automatically" transposing everything from...
I've bought a 20" octave mandolin on board a plane with no problems. It fit in the overhead bin.
Though not in the genres the OP asked for, here are 500 pages of Irish tunes and most of them can be turned into a solo mandolin performance.

Seems like it is high in the price range as you say. Here is an old listing for comparison with some commentary on the model

Bach Partitas...only much, much slower...
Use this recipe:
1. Play something only as fast as you can without making any mistakes
2. Play it a little bit faster and see what passages cause you to make mistakes
3. Play those error-prone...
If Location: Bay Area means San Francisco bay area, then you should monitor Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto from time to time. Over the years I've been able to try different OMs including...
I would talk to a lawyer. Hate to say it but the collector may have a claim, especially if he could show that by selling the loaned item it was "stolen"...since you've been informed of the...
I would recommend the Bach cello suites transcribed for violin. Particularly the Prelude to Suite No 1 in G Major. It is fun to play...a real crowd pleaser...and will give your arpeggio and cross...
I am not a viola player, but have done a bit of orchestral arranging and composition.
If the viola kid is going to be playing in an orchestra, string quartet, etc. they should learn to read the...
Saw it last night at 4AM during a bout of insomnia. Great film, many mandolins seen.
Second on "Martin Hayes", also add "Altan" and "Cherish the Ladies" to the list IMHO.
Also recommend this program http://thistleradio.com/
According to the package I have, the J80 is 22.75" scale length tuned to GDAE so you should be fine.
I would hazard to say that where old bowlbacks are concerned it is alot more "miss" than "hit" for them to be worth much money.
I think you should use J80 and tune to GDAE for a 21" scale OM
Seems fair to me. Would definitely check out the neck, they should have included a picture of the possible repair. Would check for cracks, separations, top deformations, finger board alignment, fret...
I don't see how mandolin playing can help significantly with violin playing IMHO except for learning rough fingerboard note placement. Violin playing requires much left hand attention to play in tune...
Looks like a good deal to me, assuming no major structural problems. With a little cleaning and setup you could probably sell it for twice that.
Don't know what gauge you have on there now is, but assuming it is standard (like D'Addario J80) going to lighter gauge than that will usually suffer in terms of acoustic volume and tone.
