I doubt the F5 will fade away in 20 years. I see too many clips of talented teenagers playing F5's. I think they are more indicative of the future of the instrument.
I'm the worship leader at my church and the pastor calls my mandolin a ukulele on purpose, haha. I wonder how many congregants actually believe that because of him!
I recently have moved over...
At first, when I started mandolin and switch back to guitar, I was amazed how large the frets on the guitar seemed! Now I switch between the two more naturally, though I am more proficient at guitar....
I'm really enjoying your originals! Great playing and direction!
I really enjoyed this! That is some great playing and some really cool ideas! I personally like the name "Maelstrom," there's a lot of passion in this piece.
I have a 2015 JBovier F5T that I got straight from Mr. Cowherd. Incredibly nice guy and an incredible instrument to play! I think you'll enjoy that mandolin for years!
I've been leading worship in churches since 98 and I find taking advantage of modern technology has really helped. Now I can text and email the band a set list early in the week. We can openly...
Here's a couple of my favorites!

I tend to give credit to the same things on both sides of the mandolin/musician question.

I recently recorded with a friend and after a couple of experiments he decided to use a pencil condenser mic pointed at the 12th fret about 6-8" away. The result was very natural sounding, my...
Many of the modern worship songs are in the keys of E and B, which isn't as commonly chosen in bluegrass. Nickel Creek's "This Side," and "Sweet Afton" are both in E with some cool lines in it. I'm...
Like many have said before, learn as many different chord voicings as you can! I find I like different voicing for different situations. Maybe I prefer a lower/higher chord voicing for this...
The Guitar Center in Nashville only has a few mandolins, and nothing that I would consider interesting. I only go there when I need to get something for the church. I do, however, want to try out...
You should be able to click on the picture and make it bigger, but if not here it is:
"Orv has begun lessons on his mandolin and we are getting even with the neighborhood for the noise they have...
I thought you guys would enjoy this! I saw this sitting in front of the Wright Brothers' airplane at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum recently.

Update: I've tried what AlanN suggested. Removing the cat from the sheet music has been a huge improvement!

Any help would be appreciated, this is turning out to be a catastrophe.
Ha, that's pretty neat. You can get harmonics of any note by going 5, 7 or 12 frets above the note your hitting. For instance the F# on the E string at 2nd fret. Hold that down and lightly place...
I think this video by Mike Marshall is excellent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmagoBQunZI
I've heard several interviews from great players that say you almost want the pick flying out of your...
My wife named mine Mandy. Then she says I spend more time with Mandy than her.
I was also one of those who didn't want to believe a $35 dollar pick would make much of a difference. To make a long story short, I now go between a BlueChip CT55 and a Wegen TF-140. The BC...
I have found this to be true for me many times. Sometimes giving my hands a break and a good nights sleep does wonders for that tune I'm struggling with.
Great thread here! I'm still new to playing Folk/Old Time/BG, etc. and sometimes struggle with the many variations in the melody of the songs. I have four books close by with some of the same songs...
I just got my new mandolin from Jeff Cowherd (owner of J Bovier) two days ago and I have to say that I'm ecstatic about this instrument. Jeff made my dad one of the same model a few months back and...
