Re: Price increases coming soon or already here

    Crazy. But makes sense.

Luckily, old bowlbacks are going pretty cheap still.

    Re: Reharmonization with bitonality

And if you mess up the rhythm, just say you're experimenting with polyrhythms. Who needs rules?
  4. Re: Does your mando need a setup? Learn to do it yourself!

Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

Practice chromatic scales, starting on different notes/frets as this will help you master half step passages.

But really from an application stand point, it completely depends on the context...
  6. Re: Basic Question: Vivaldi Concerto in D major RV 93

But the end sound of that is a more percussive sound, rather than legato, at least on the mandolin, at least in my opinion, by plucking that D, you can get the ringing of the open d strings which...
  7. Re: Looking for help with bowlback mandolin identification

Here are a few more pics. Hopefully this helps. I was hoping you'd have some thoughts. In my research, I've came across quite a few of your posts where you lend your expertise, Jim.

    Re: Books About Mandolins

Check out 'The Early Mandolin' by James Taylor and Paul Sparks. It's a great work on the development of the mandolin from the mandolino to the neapolitan mandolin which where the mandolin really...

    Nice work!
  10. Looking for help with bowlback mandolin identification

I picked up both of these for what I believe was a decent price. They are in really good shape, old, but lack any sort of label.

I believe both mandolins are Oscar Schmidt. From what I can tell,...

    Re: R.I.P. Paddy Maloney

I've been listening to the Chieftains pretty much my entire musical career. Really my first exposure (that I can remember) to traditional Irish music. It was sad hearing of his passing.

Re: NMD, But there's a problem

My 9 year old keeps asking me when I'm only going to play my octave mandolin so he can have my Eastman. It's a good problem to have.

    https://youtu.be/r-NpXiIprow

Learned this tune from John Reischman's peghead nation course (Melodic Mandolin Tunes?), and decided to write a variation for it too.

That's awesome to hear. I'd love to own an A5. Those things seem to be amazing instruments (as do all of the Northfield's)

Re: Tuning issues - Octave Mandolin

You've received a lot of feedback about setting up the instrument properly, and you should get that done. But also make sure you check your strings. Depending on how long you've had your instrument...
