    Re: Sight read tab?

I truly appreciate the well thought out and musically uplifting post.

I only want to discuss this:

" But the mandolin is 12TET and the violin is not. Some things, like glissandos and tremolos,...

    Re: Sight read tab?

I have seen some Greek bouzouki music in TAB on Youtube.

As for Arabic, Turkish, etc. music, I cannot recall seeing any in TAB, only staff notation. There may be some out there, but I am unaware...

Re: Need Help Identifying Strange Mandolin

I often put a piece of material to kill the resonance between the bridge and tailpiece. It's just a string damper.

    Re: Sight read tab?

Yes, TAb is generally not part of the classical tradition unless you play lute.

I find the violin and mandolin to be very similar in terms of left hand fingering. Now, the frets/no frets...

Re: Help with Come Back to Sorrento please.

Nice version, in Am instead of the more common Dm or Cm versions.

Not as much bending as pipa....yes, it is very close to mandolin technique compared to erhu or guzheng.

    Re: LiuQin

It works well enough - it's in tune and has decent action. I've seen better ones but for me it's fun to have. It's my 2nd liuqin, my first was an unbranded clunker.

I do play Chinese music on my...
  9. Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

I must confess that I have never watched the show. Really :)

Anyway, thanks for the kind response...I think.;)
  10. Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

But there would only be a mental "reading" of the music.

A better analogy would be "If we could all read music, wouldn't be no need for rehearsals. The band would show up on the gig and sight...
  11. Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

That reminds me of the old Italian solfeggio method of learning to sing off of notation (various clefs, too) before you got to play an instrument, thus guaranteeing that the music was "in the ear" of...

    Re: Itakian Love Song

There are version in the "Ballo Liscio" thread - but no TABS, only staff notation.
  13. Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

Good point - ANY music notation is no more the actual music than a script is a performance of a play or a blueprint is a house.

No, I got a cheap Xinghai model a year or so ago off of Shopgoodwill.

I have bought many other instruments from Red Music Shop and they have been a reliable source for Chinese musical items.

  15. Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

Just to clarify, many "better" editions of staff notation for guitar and mandolin do suggest fingering and fretting using small numbers.

Nowadays a lot of books have staff notation and TAB.

    the...

  17. Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

I can read mandolin and guitar TAB if needed, and I have spent some time playing the lute in the 80's and 90's.

I prefer staff notation, but that's because I've worked in situations that use a...
  18. Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

As for the last part, I agree with it and with much/most of your well-thought out post.

But as for staff notation being harder to learn, I do not agree. Children can easily learn how to play music...

Re: 1898 ward and son/ Marano mandolin

Exactly. Beyond the fact that very many of these old bowlbacks are still around, demand is lower than for archtop mandolins, there is the issue of condition and playability.

    Many old bowlbacks...

Only if you mean medieval organ TAB, which became the grand staff.

However, Gregorian chant staff notation was around before TAB.

Notation was around during the lute era where lute (and...

Re: Need Help w/Chord Chart Search Term

What you need is an explanation of how to harmonize a scale, in this case starting with the major scale.

So if we are in C, the basic chords are:

I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, vii diminished, and back...
