    Re: Eastman ERM El Rey

Thanks very much for that review Martin and congrats on getting published by FJ. (Did they pay you?)

Re: Playing a five string vs a four

I chord mostly on the bottom three strings (CGD). Getting up to the E string is a bit of a finger twister. It's harder to mute the C string than the E string, so 5 note chords are called for. But...
  3. Re: Rio Grande Mock 4 Pickup for Gibson EM200

I have been digging ever deeper into electric instrumentation and amplification this past year. I agree with Len. If your very good looking EM200 is electrically stock then there may be things you...
  4. The D.Gilchrist in the classifieds

    No connection to me whatsoever.

I look at the work and I think, "That's beautiful stuff, but it should be 5 string with a Jonathan Mann wrap...
  5. Re: Effects for use on acoustic amp or PA with K and K pickup

Staying acoustic, a bit of compression and a boost are always helpful.
Look into effects made by Origin Effects (NFI), they have great pre-amp circuits.

Give a Boss GE-7 EQ pedal a try. It has a...

    Re: Eastman ERM El Rey

Hey Martin, what's the scale length on the ERM? Eastman isn't saying on their website.

    Thanks!

    Re: Argh...

    We have a winner (ish).

It doesn't tick all the boxes, but it sounds great. I have reacquired my Ampeg JetII J-12T (15w, 1x12").
Ampeg made a bunch of these in 2007 and 2008. I bought mine new....

    Gorgeous work Nigel!

  10. Re: 4-string emando, what’s the best out there?

I read on the cafe some time ago that Tiny Moore chorded like he was playing a mandola and solo-ed like he was playing a mandolin. It dawned on me at that point that a 5 string mandolin is just a...
  11. Re: Requesting Recommendation for Strings for MIX Mandolin

I don't use anything but Elixirs on my Mix F5, though admittedly I have not tried anything else but D'Addarios.

The back of my Arrow G5 5 string. Quilty goodness.
The photo is adding a lot of red. The sunburst is actually more of a tobacco colour.

    Re: Argh...

    Thanks guys.

I think I overstated my case. The reason I don't want a bass amp is because guitar amps tend to colour the tone more, and I'm after a bit of colour, especially with the JBovier.

  14. Re: 19" octave mandolin - tune as CGDA

    I'd start with a standard mandolin set. I use D'addario EJ-74s.

The string tension calculator (http://stringtensionpro.com/) shows a reduction in tension of about 4 pounds from a standard...

Re: 4- vs 8-string electric mandos

Listen to Paul Buskirk, Tiny Moore, Eldon Shamblin, Johnny Gimbel, Alex Gregory, Ricky Skaggs, Mike Lampert, Michael Kang, Jason Anick, and a few others.

For me the 4 and 5 string emandos are...

    Re: Argh...

Thanks guys. All good advice, taken in various forms over the years already.

I'm just grousing because all the gear is made with guitars and guitar players in mind.

    Argh...

I wish someone would make an amp for the frequencies a 5 string electric mandolin puts out.

Frankly a little frustrated with the available choices these days.

I know several of you are happy...

Re: My new Airline Electric Mandola

    Hi Joe,

You've done what I would have done to start: get a new set of strings. Old strings can be a source of a lot of weirdness.

Have you had the instrument set up?
    Have you determined if...

    Hmmm...
Red or white (or maybe mahogany?) it looks like the same maker.

Can't help even a little! But I'm hanging on an answer, and enjoying Hot Pickin'!

  23. Daniel on an Arrow G5 doing a little Temperance Reel

I've been banging on about this instrument down in the emando section for months, so I thought it sporting to share the video.
The occasion was a gig at the Blue Boar in Temple Grafton,...
  24. Re: My mandolin got eaten by a Stratocaster.

    See?
You shoulda grabbed a 4 or 5 string emando. You'd still be playing it. ;)

Re: Anyone use an octave pedal?

    Thanks for the replies Mike!

I just pulled the trigger on a Mooer Pure Octave pedal. I'll reply when I've had a chance to put it through its paces.

I'm thinking about delay and reverb as well....
