Re: JJB pickup choice for cittern

I've used the PPS 200 in the majority of my over 2 dozen JJB pickup installs. I've put them in fiddles, mandolins, octave mandolins, mandola, resonator mandos, banjolin, guitars, mandocello and an...

    Re: Eastman Vs. Morris

That's certainly not true of all Morris mandolins. I've played a lot of his builds.

A traditional A4 or F4 has the neck join the body at the 12th fret. My Morris hybrid F4 neck (elevated...

    Re: Eastman Vs. Morris

I've played several mandolins built by Sonny Morris (he lives about an hour drive away from me). Most were carved top and back. Each sounded and played great. I've played fewer by Eastman, but...

    Re: Octave tuning/string tension question

I've used and recommended the "halve the diameter, double the frequency" thumb rule here for over 10 years and done it on over 5 different instruments with no issues.

    Here's an even simpler way...

    Re: Eastman needs new strings

Curt Mangan sells individual strings - ball end, loop end, phosphor bronze, Monel, plain steel, etc. Also every music shop I've ever been in, but selection/availability varies.
  7. Re: Help figuring mandolin string buzz that come and goes?

Your action is likely changing with variation in relative humidity and/or temperature.
  8. Re: String Gauges For Cittern, changing Unisons to Octaves

How is this tuned? I have a similar scale F4 mandocello tuned Cc-Gg-Dd-AA-EE using Curt Mangan 70/36-46/22-30/15-20/20-11.5/11.5 loop end strings (the Allen tailpiece will take ball ends, too).
  9. Re: String Gauges For Cittern, changing Unisons to Octaves

I have used the 2:1 or halve the diameter for the octave string thumb rule on many instruments for the past 13 years. Works fine, no issues.

    Re: Ugliest F-4 ever?

Looks like Guy Clark's description of the inspiration for his song "Picasso's Mandolin."

    Re: Eastman needs new strings

I've never tried any coated strings, but I started using Curt Mangan strings last year and have been very impressed with the tone, volume and sustain. I've used a lot of different strings on my...

    Re: Octave Recommendations?

You've heard wrong. I have several mandolin family instruments with maple back, sides (and neck). I have guitar-like sustain on my TJ Jessen (Cricket fiddle) 10 string mandola, F4 octave mandolin...
  13. Re: Looking at your hands while playing -- opinions?

I like to play on camping trips, campfire jams, festival jams - situations where there isn't much light. It's good to not have to be able to see my hands to play then. Also when playing for a live...

I have relatives in Vista, been there many times over the years but never to Summergrass. What's the venue like? How is the camping? Most of the festivals up here in the PNW have cancelled again...
  15. Re: Double Stops with Radiused vs. Flat Fretboard

Double stops originated on bowed orchestral stringed instruments - violin, viola, cello, etc. These fingerboards are much more radiused than any mandolin you'll ever find. Yet players have been...

I don't baby any of my instruments (IMO), nor am I hard on them. I have worked as a power plant operator for the past 40 years, and have a certain approach/attitude/touch when it comes to using...

    Re: Picks....a different angle.

I like thicker picks now on mandolin, mandola, octave...
