  1. Re: The waiting begins: order in for Clark Octave

I've become a big fan of K&K. So far I have their pickups on 2 mandolins, 3 guitars, and an upright bass. With the gigs I do having a solid pickup system solves a bunch of problems so it's a must....
  2. Re: The waiting begins: order in for Clark Octave

I'm really excited. Wasn't exactly holding my breath, but did get a nice little happy moment when I saw the email from Austin that my deposit had arrived.

@Ray - Yikes! Always ups the ante when...
  3. The waiting begins: order in for Clark Octave

I don't post here much, but I have read through many of the threads here in CBOM over the last few years as I've been learning about and stoking my interest in octave mandos. I had one brief fling...
  4. Re: Tenor Banjo suggestion for beginner Mando player

Yes, everything you've learned on Mando transfers over, though depending on your hand/finger size you may have some challenging stretches due to the different scale lengths. I found it moved over...

Re: Show your Mando "Gig Rig"!

I've used a variety of things over the last 20 years, but have pretty well settled down to my current setup. I'm usually tripling on my gigs now (mando, guitar, bass) and I wanted something simple...

    Re: Updating an older Gibson

I just had this done on my '23 Snakehead. New frets, radiused the original fretboard and bridge, added a strap button to the heel. Also swapped in a K&K pickup for the Fishman bridge pickup that's...

Re: Strap button for a gibson A

After almost 20 years playing my '23 Snakehead, I finally had a strap button put on it on the side of the heel. Prior to this I used a strap that wrapped around the headstock just behind the nut.

  8. Re: Budget A-style Octave: Is there such a thing?

I have a Lafferty octave I just picked up this summer used off the classifieds here. It's a nice journeyman instrument, wouldn't hesitate to gig with it. I have played some of the guitar bodied ones...

    Re: Lafferty Bouzouki

I just picked up a Lafferty octave this summer. Bought it used off the classifieds here. Mine needs some fretwork to get playing well, bit otherwise it's a nice instrument. Mine was definiely made by...

    Re: Preamp for K&K pickup?

I used that Source Audio EQ pedal for a number of years in my pedal setup for acoustic gigs, worked great (though the battery didn't last and it needed to be plugged in for power). I triple at most...
  11. Re: Would you install a pickup on your expensive ($3k+) mando?

    Yes, no hesitation.

I put a K&K in my Phoenix Bluegrass, and I've had a Fishman bridge pickup (with endpin jack) in my 23 Snakehead for years. As to the obsolete question, I had that Fishman on...

    Re: Phoenix mandolins closing shop?

    A true shame then.

I wish Jenny all the best in whatever is to come, and I will continue to enjoy my Phoenix for many songs to come.

    Re: Phoenix mandolins closing shop?

That would be a real shame. I love my Phoenix Bluegrass (built by Jenny Warner).

Spent the weekend listening to this. Very nice stuff -- it's earned a place in the regular rotation. Go get yourself a copy

Short clip of the new mando in action.

And after I wrote the last post I pulled all my instruments out of their cases for a minute. Counted 4...

Re: A new Phoenix in the land of the Snakeheads

Thanks folks. The more I play the new Phoenix the happier I am with it. It is just what I was looking for. Can't wait to get a pickup installed so I can get it out to my gigs.

    Hoping to get a...

Re: A new Phoenix in the land of the Snakeheads

Thanks, guys. I'm really happy with the Phoenix so far. Will need to get a pickup installed soon so I can put it in regular gig rotation.

No F in my future, but some sort of octave (with the...

A new Phoenix in the land of the Snakeheads

My new (to me) 2017 Phoenix Bluegrass arrived today! I've been searching for the last month or so for something to compliment my trusty '23 Snakehead. Wanted something more on the Bluegrass side of...

Re: Seagull S8 mandolin. I just got one.

After a bit of reading on the issue, my guess too is that it's a bad nut slot. String change didn't help, so I'll deal with the nut one of these days.

Another plus for me is that it's such a nice...

Re: Seagull S8 mandolin. I just got one.

I just picked up one as well, and I quite like it. Makes a perfect mando to keep next to my desk at home, and will be nice for traveling, camping, and use as a spare. I like that it's not a standard...

Re: Hauling a bass and mando

Previous vehicle was a Honda Fit, and it was great for an upright (I play upright as well as mando and guitar). Huge amounts of space. Good in the snow as well (I'm up in the Utah mountains). Current...
  22. Got the TKL in today

Thanks again for the thoughts and suggestions. Wound up going with the TKL Zero Gravity, and it came in today. It's a bit bulky, bit the mandolin fits nicely. The body fits snugly, and the short neck...
  23. Re: Any one confirm this case will work for my '23 Snakehead?

Is the Eastman case folks talk about this one?

    http://www.eastmancasecompany.com/jw/mandolin.htm

I see references to it all the time, but am not sure specifically what folks are talking about.
  24. Re: Any one confirm this case will work for my '23 Snakehead?

I'm very careful with case latches -- never had one open but I pay attention. My original case doesn't have much cushion left inside. Maybe I'll restore it some day, maybe it'll sit in my basement...
  25. Re: Any one confirm this case will work for my '23 Snakehead?

May be a direction I go in as well in the future. I've been using the original Gibson case for years and it works okay, it's just disintegrating. I'll try the Zero Gravity for a while and see how it...
