    Re: Free Waterloo Mandolin

It would be rude not to accept the offer, so ‘yes, of course I’d like one’.

    Or two, because they’re little:)

    Re: Mandolin Influences

I took up mandolin because my Dad played as an Applachian kid in the teens and 20s and as I approached retiring I decided to take it up. Never thought about it when I started guitar playing in my...

Beautiful work and such a busy schedule!

But wait until you're retired, you'll wonder how you ever had time to work:)

Re: In praise of mandolin builder Matt Ruhland

Is that damned by faint praise? I'd be curious to know what it sounded like compared to other instruments in in price range. I doubt you only played one mandolin at Carters.

Re: 1976 Gehrardt Green F5 Pictures

We got a picture, not a sound clip. I commented on its looks, not it’s, as yet unknown, sound. But if it sounded great, it would still be ugly, to me anyway.

  6. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

I'm not offended and disagree on both counts. The richness of tone statement could apply just as well to acoustic v electric guitars and the short scale doesn't seem to be an issue for electric...

    Re: Tone wood Backs

It’s not uncommon to have all koa or all mahogany instruments. They sound fine.

Spruce for the back may be a little too soft for durability and may need to be too thick for good sound.
  8. Re: What is the most mandolins you've owned at one time?

My wife only has one mandolin, so she doesn't frequent the Cafe. She does have 4 guitars and 3 banjos though.

I have 2 electric mandolins and 6 acoustic ones. And a few guitars.

    And a banjo....

    Re: New White Face mandolin

Not a fan of paint on mandolins. Like to see the grain. Makes me think that it’s a way to hide flaws in the wood, even if there aren’t any.

Don’t like it on old Gibson’s either.

Thatís a very personal question 😊

  13. Re: Lose grip on a thick pick or use a thin pick?

Evan Marshall uses as floppy a pick as I've ever seen. He seems to have no trouble picking the right strings at the right time. Here's that floppy pick on the last movement of the William Tell...

Re: Stupid(?) question re: resawing wood

Ok, the piece that needs a fence to regulate a degree of freedom is fence side. Typically the fence is inboard. If you arenít regulating either side except by eye, suit yourself. There are many...

Just like a table saw, the waste is outboard from the fence.

How to start? With a plan that includes:

    1. You will need the requisite woodworking skills.
    2. You'll need the requisite finishing skills.
    3. You'll need some equipment/tools/machinery (I...

Did you make an elevation as part of the drawings? You should easily see the dimensions needed for the neck geometry. And you'd need a detailed drawing of the top to show how the fingerboard...

Wonderful to reread this after learning about the Jazz From the Hills cd in a workshop with Don Steirnberg over the weekend. Homer, Jethro, Chet, Dale Potter and George Barnes. Great listen.
