    Re: Replacing Tuners

The 4 strings should hold it if you are careful. It may move however when you string up the four you have off, so marking is a good idea.

Re: What tools do I need ?

Once you sharpen your chisels to be sharp enough to do this work you can never use them on a door again, or strike them with anything. May want to keep one or two for the doors, haha

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

The thing I like most about the unitune is the long battery life. I have one I use daily many times and it has been over a year with the same battery. They are also accurate and offer strob or...

Re: What tools do I need ?

I have made a bone top for an adjustable mandolin bridge with all the steps for intonation, it would be the same for a non-adjustable one. It's more work, but worth it than simply using a straight...

    Re: Harmonicas & Mandolins

Try and get harmonicas with a plastic comb, not the wooden comb. the wood swells when you play it a lot from moisture and will tear your lips. If you cut it down you need to soak them to keep them...

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

The Polytune is a little more than you need for mandolin as it will check the 6 guitar strings, The Unitune is the same without that aspect and I think works better for the mandolin. I have both and...

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

Good choice Sue, I have several of those. I keep one on each instrument I may travel and play so I won't forget to bring a tuner. They are most accurate on the strob setting. That is also a good...

    Re: Fretboard Frets Question

To answer you question, no. The scale length to the 12th fret will have to stay the same and the frets need to be in the correct place. You can, as others have said, take some out to make it easier...

    Re: Harmonicas & Mandolins

Not all of the time, but most of the time the key of the song is the last chord in the song.

Now to add to what NDO said. First I'll ask a question. Are you going to play straight harp or are you...
  11. Re: Making a bridge setting jig - good idea or not?

Remember when the humidity changes and the top expands or contracts it changes the string height. Changing the string height changes the intonation. So unless the glued on bridge can easily adjust...

Re: Machine tuning - bushings don't fit

What I have done in the past to use tuners that don't fit is cut the tuner plate at the screw mounting holes. The cuts will let the tuner fit your mandolin. The screws will still hold the tuners on...

Re: Multiple guitars but just one mandolin

I have owned a Terz guitar that is tuned a 3rd up, and a friend on mine owns a baritone guitar that is tuned down a 5th. I have to transpose on the fly when I play with him.

    Re: Monroe's strings

bgpete if you go into your bathroom and face the mirror or play into a corner you can get a good representation of what your mandolin sounds like in front of you.

Re: Pickup for New Loar M-520

When I do plug in I want my acoustic instrument to sound acoustic and have gone to great lengths to try and get that. We don't play loud, but I play with electric and plugged in guitars and sometimes...

    Re: Monroe's strings

Remember on some mandolins a heavier string may dampen the top. Your mandolin may like the lighter string. Seems like you do and that's what matters.

    Re: Light or Medium strings?

There is also the fact that heavier strings can have a lower action than lighter strings. Because of the tension they don't move as much for the same force applied as lighter strings. With a lower...

You're supposed to clean it, hahaha. While I do occasionally clean it, keeping it in the case when it is not being played doesn't let it get too bad. I have mandolins that I have had for decades that...

Re: Pickup for New Loar M-520

A K&K twin internal would be my choice, I have them in a few instruments. With any piezo you will need a preamp to go into the PA to match impedance. Having said that the piezo will sound OK into...

    Re: Tenor guitar hairline crack

  25. Re: String preferences for Collings MTO oval mandolins?

Choice of strings on any mandolin would make a difference on the sound you are after. Myself I would not like silk and steel on any mandolin or guitar. My preference would be to try many types and...
