Re: Rest in Peace Bobby Osborne

Very sad news, indeed. “The Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza” double CD triggered my first mandolin purchase in 1999. We’ve lost a quarter of the ensemble in the last few days.

    Re: John Duffey Pick

Looks like a thick, rounded, Dawg-shaped pick.

Re: A Loar on Craigslist? Yes sir!

I thing the whole thing is somewhat suspect. The headstock looks wrong for a Loar or for 198317Wayne Henderson’s work. The point of the binding doesn’t come around enough in a manner that would...
  4. Re: Gibson Master Model vs Custom Master Model - advice please

    To succinctly answer your questions:

No, I would not buy it. It sounds like an oddball instrument.
The market for a “proper” Master Model would be much more efficient should you decide to sell.

Re: Playing rhythm with a stiff pick?

Keep a loose grip on the pick. It should be able to move against the string. A “death grip” will surely prevent fluid articulation in your rhythm.

    Re: "The Loar" by Weber?

I played that mandolin about 16-17 years ago when it was offered by the same seller.

    Re: Tortoise shell pick alternative

Blue Chips are great in their own right, but they are not direct TS substitutes.

For a synthetic material, Ultex is your best bet. I like the Dunlop Primetones.
Just try a slightly thinner pick...

Re: New Vessel Loar A5 tribute

My wife once attended a girls’-night-out art class with a friend.
The event consisted of an instructor and a dozen girls sipping Chardonnay while attempting to paint Van Gogh’s Starry night with...

Re: Should Bryan Kimsey scallop my guitar?

To me, the scalloped guitar may sound a bit more open for chording.
But the un-scalloped guitar has better clarity, definition, and over-all “punchiness”.

Re: Are All Lloyd Loars Dropping In Price?

Gruhn’s has a Feb. 18 ‘24 Virzi that looks pretty issue-free listed for 115k. “Motivated seller.”
I’d wager that with a desire to buy, and 100k in your pocket, you could have a pick of several...

    Re: Concerning Loar copy mandolins

John Paganoni was one of the earliest builders to copy a Loar. However, he always insisted on placing his own name on the headstock.

This is his #2, built over 50 years ago.

Re: Fern Loar F5 Attic Find

In the early 2000’s, there was a fern listed on EBay as a ‘29 that looked like that. It was listed by a pawn shop with a Buy It Now price of 15,000. One of this forum’s “former” members scooped it...

    Re: Damage to Loar A5???

I think that’s from having a strap looped underneath the fingerboard extension.
What else are you gonna do? That little guy doesn’t have a proper strap hanger.
