To the OP: This is probably way late and there are other posts about this throughout this site, but to be able to tune a mandola GDAE, the scale length has to be at least 17". I have a European...
Thanks to all of you and others who have posted about Rob's mandolin setup eBook I learned about Rob's offer. Rob responded right away and sent me his pdf. Thank you, Rob! I agree with Br1ck as a...
Ooh, nice! I’ve bought instruments from this luthier before. He has a store in Switzerland where he sells instruments he’s restored. He's a wonderful person and I think he told me he has formal...
A Shutt is making an appearance! I would be tempted if I didn’t already have one...

Thank you for the info, Jim. I had difficulty finding information on strings for a Lombardic/Milanese. Your experience with the gut strings and Aquila are helpful.
From my limited experience I know whether the neck is straight or not is critical, especially since repairs on the neck can be cost prohibitive. The narrow fluted back Make this a high end instrument...
The mandolin is quite amazing. The neck is a little thinner than modern mandolins, but the tone is beautiful. I can’t believe I’m playing a 250 year-old mandolin.
Good point, Jeff.
I think they are so beautiful! Why would they be less desirable???
As a matter of fact, the luthier (Who is in Southern Switzerland) did say that the Swiss are not interested in antique mandolins so there isn’t much of a market there for him. He does have a couple...

I just succeeded in importing from Europe an antique mandolin with tortoise shell on the pick guard, headstock, and neck. After I agreed to buy it I was informed it had "turtle" on it. I did a lot...
I am enchanted by these Milanese and Lombardic mandolins. There is one on eBay, being sold as "project" by a highly skilled luthier in Switzerland from whom I bought a fully restored 1770 probably...
I have been having a similar problem where my reply to the classified ads go unanswered. I have not heard back from one person I responded to a few days ago either.
Wow, thank you for the heads up. I use PayPal a lot but haven't noticed this. I'll keep an eye out from now on.
Oops, sorry folks, I hadn't visited for a while and hadn't realized that you had replied to my post! Thank you!
This is indeed the 754. I "won" it on eBay, had it tuned up by a local luthier, and...
First time posting here! Excited to be part of this amazing community.
I am the fortunate winner of a L&H A-style mandolin (which I saw got some attention in Sept when the seller posted a...
What a beautiful album! The singing and the melodies are hauntingly beautiful and ethereal. Highly recommended!
