That was really cool! As a songwriter myself, I enjoyed hearing how he has come up with his ideas for some of the songs. Very inspiring...I think I better grab pen, paper and mando and start...

Re: Breaking in or Opening Up

Because I feel as though I am slowly yet constantly improving as a player, that perhaps the improved sound is the result of better "tone" I get through improved technique rather than the instrument...

    Re: Shout out to Collings

I have lusted after Collings mandolins since I saw a wall full of them in Gruhn's Guitar Shop years ago. I cannot afford one at this time, but as soon as I can, I will get one.
  9. Re: Do You Play ALL of Your Mandolins Regularly?

I only have one mandolin. I am primarily a guitar player and I have just one acoustic guitar; however, I do have a handful of electric guitars and I do rotate them regularly because I love them all....
  10. Re: To the multi instrumentalists: which instrument is your no. 1

Definitely guitar, but I love to switch around between acoustic and electric, mando, bass and piano for variety and because I love hearing how they all sound.

    Re: New Eastman 615

It is a beautiful instrument! I have a 615 sunburst that I love. I bought it at Picker's Supply in Fredericksburg, VA over 2 years ago. I like it better the more I have played it.

Re: Does mandolin improve guitar technique

I think if you abandon the guitar for the mandolin, you will not improve your guitar skills by playing mando, but if you do continue to play the guitar or any other instrument, I think it will have a...

Re: Micing mandolins for recording purposes...

I use Audio Technica 4040s in the studio but will sometimes plug it into my Fender Acoustasonic jr. and mic that as well, blending the two sounds.

There was a great piece on him in Fretboard Journal several issues ago...a real talent and individual.
  20. Re: I put new strings on and positioned the bridge myself

"Are you really only changing strings once every three years?
Perhaps your mando has been quite due to dead strings."

That was immediate thought as well.

    Re: Thank You, Collings

If I am ever able to afford to upgrade my current mandolin, it will be to a Collings. They just kill me with the looks and the sound.
