Re: Estate sale find in Ohio -- maybe

It looks more like a 60's model Martin to me as well. Maybe they reversed the 64 with 46.

    Re: Acquired a Strad-O-Lin

The original tuners would have helped date it but I take it for earlier than the 50's. The bridge needs looks like somebody took an adjustable bridge and glued some pieces together then had to stack...

    Re: Schaller tuner replacement

Gibson might still have some but I doubt Dave Harvey would give them up. They are occasionally available used. Grover's can be an issue. The shaft holding the buttons on the Schallers (and Gibson...

    Re: Schaller tuner replacement

That must have been just prior to Gibson moving to the Gibson Grover tuners. Gibson had them made as direct drop in replacements so they didn't have to change any tooling if I recall correctly. Those...

    Re: Schaller tuner replacement

Chances are you may have to redrill some of the screw holes. Hopefully the old holes are covered by the new plate. You're looking for worm-over A style tuners. You need to know the post hole spacing....

    Re: Chinese made mandolins (Northfield?)

A few years back a gentleman named Bob McRee started posting here regarding having mandolins built in China. He lived there. He was basically turning a shop of violin luthiers into a shop of mandolin...

    Re: Mother-of-Pearl nut?

A few years ago I had the nut on my F5G changed to pearl. I did it because I like the way it looked. The mandolin already sounded good to me.

You can attach an mp3 file by selecting Go Advanced. When you see the paper clip on the tool bar select the mp3 file from your local PC. Follow the prompts. After you post the message you'll see the...

    Re: Refinishing a Flatiron F5?

It's your mandolin, you own it. It's your choice. Either way it will still be yours. Have at it. I agree, call Bruce and see what it was. Heck, he might even do the work for you. My Flatiron didn't...
  13. Re: Michael P Smith, songwriter of "This Old Mandolin", has passe

Someone else wrote on FB that they had purchased one of his songbooks and asked if Michael even got his own chords right! I agree with Allen. Good luck.
  14. Re: Mysterious Alabama Octave Mandolin (No Lable)

You mean it wasn't made in Alabama?

    Strong resemblance.
  15. Re: Michael P Smith, songwriter of "This Old Mandolin", has passe

I've been a fan for decades. I was sorry to hear of his passing. There's actually a Facebook group devoted to Michael if anyone is interested.

    Re: Refretting

I assume you are getting the same Stewmac messages that I get but if not they are having a sale on tools, I think it was 15% off on fret tools.

Re: No makers marks on this one.

A whole lot of makers used that open book headstock shape. The fact that Gibson can claim it to me is pretty laughable but they have.

    Re: Double Standard

I never even thought about where that came from. It appears there are other explanations including a football explanation. None of them sounded real compelling to me so you're on your own.

It really has nothing to do with you David or your concession. The process was started and people think this was some sort of admonishment and I just got a PM about it, so let me say this. I really...

Since we are going to discuss the double standard, let's look at this line in the OP.
