    Re: beside the mandolin.

Now that I'm (very close to being) retired I decided to try and learn clawhammer, which has interested me for a long, long time. I started with a Deering, and recently got a Rickard.

Re: Not much of a mando culture in my area

I don't play bluegrass, so I'm generally the only mando player when I play out. I did fish a colleague into buying a 20s Gibson A, though, so now there's two of us.

    Re: Slide on a mandolin?

I've seen Rich Delgrosso and Steve James play slide. GDGD tuning, I think? (May need some non-standard string gages.) I like playing slide on guitar, but the notes sure are close together on a...

  7. Re: What genres of music do you play on mando (besides bluegrass)

It took me years to realize that there is such a thing as blues mandolin (guess I wasn't paying good enough attention), but that's what I gravitated toward. Also "folk music", whatever that means.

Re: Do you know what a Charango is? I do now.

I bought one on the street in Quito. It wasn't very playable, but it did have binding that was put on with ballpoint pen. I replaced it with a nice Bolivian one bought from Elderly. I still find...

It's the only size I use on mando. Lately I've been trying out Graph Tech Tusq picks, which not only come in several different thicknesses and sizes, but also different materials which emphasize...

Re: Where do you buy your mandolins?

Three from Elderly, one from Steve Ryder and one from a shoe store in Costa Rica. I'd recommend the first two over that third option

Re: Books? New kid looking for reading list

Rich DelGrosso's book on blues mandolin combines instruction plus history and biographical notes, if that's a genre you're interested in.

Re: Gibson Pumpkin Top, advice please.

I've got a '16, which I've owned for about a year and a half. It's held up well (although my ownership is less than 2% of its age). I've avoided putting heavy strings on it.

    Re: Live in Indiana?

I'm a couple hours from Indy, so I spend a lot of time being the only mando in guitar jams (which is rather fun, actually).

    Re: Guitar / Mandolin question

It depends on how the melody note sits against the baseline - sometimes it's a pinch, sometime the melody note is off the beat.

In any case, if it fits the tune, it's right. You don't hear any...

So maybe it was the ballpoint part?

  25. Re: Instruments you regret buying: the ones that should have got

I've also learned better than to buy charangos whose binding was created with a ballpoint pen (always better to go for the sharpie, if not the shar-pei, type).
