    Re: Heiden vs Northfield GOM

I haven't played a Northfield octave mando but I sure like how they look. I played one northfield mando and really dug it. the voicing was great. I just received my Heiden octave mando and it is...

    New Heiden Octave Short Scale

This showed up today. Waited two years and hoo boy is it great. Michael has built four instruments for me over the past 30 years. This thing plays and sounds as good as it looks.

Re: Sierra Hull plays a Duff octave mandolin

If anyone is interested, I transcribed that video for my own practice (and in preparation for the Heiden Octave I should be getting any day now).

Re: In Praise of Michael Heiden

I love my F5 but I miss my old A-009. I wonder if anyone on the cafe bought it from Dusty Strings and if they like it and play it? I had to sell it to pay for my F5 (which is the joy of the world)...

    Re: Heiden string choices

I use the D’Addario Chris Thile set and my Heiden likes the sturdier A string and E string, but I also used the Simonoff sets for a while and they were good too. I’ll try those GHS sets.

Re: Right Hand Mandolin Book in the making!

A good description of the various approaches within and across genres, from classical to choro to bluegrass, with illustrations and exercises sounds like a must have resource to me! Glad you’re...
  13. Are there any Classical Mandolinists in the Vancouver BC area?

I'm keen to take a lesson or two or at least have a chat with anybody in my metro area that plays classical instruments.

    Best regards,

Re: Bill Collings has passed away

Was he ill? This seems very sudden, I'm quite taken aback; a real loss to the world of music. My condolences to his family friends and colleagues. People will play and speak of his work for...

Has anyone played a Hopf Model 34?

    Hi folks,

I'm looking to enter the world of German classical mandolin, but of course don't want to start with a bespoke instrument at this stage. Anyone with experience will the D Hopf line of...
  18. Re: Fourth Finger or not to Fourth Finger, that is the question

I'm liking the discussion. I'm on board with the fourth finger, use it all the time, but I wondered if there was something unconscious going on with the great players that gives them greater success...
  19. Re: Fourth Finger or not to Fourth Finger, that is the question

Thanks! He says live on stage he goes for power, which is the third finger, but he "should" use the pinky. This is the crux of it, I think. Should he really?
  20. Re: Fourth Finger or not to Fourth Finger, that is the question

I agree with you both, as I started with fiddle and moved to the mandolin in my late teens. That said, it does take more force to fret a pinky on a mandolin, and I wondered if, as upright players...
  21. Fourth Finger or not to Fourth Finger, that is the question

So I've been studying lots of the great players, and it seems there is a great divide between those who say the left pinky is a must (Thile, Marshall) and those who say they wish they'd use it but...

I'm pretty sure it's 16 3/8. Just the right balance of playability and a non floppy C string. Really great.
