    Re: Electro / Acoustic Mandolin

Tall order.......how about a used Epiphone MM-50E? That should hit your price, look, and sound requirement.

Otherwise, you could get into a used solid body for even less cash, but I don't know of...

    Re: Stradolin or copy?

Trying, trying to "wrap" my mind around what I just read.......

Ok, when given a choice between an original USA mandolin that commonly sells for $100-150 or an import copy, the buyer choses the...

Re: Mandolin Orange on today Show

They are masters of the melancholy..........

in the best possible way, like the Louvin Brothers, mood-wise and theme-wise, although the sound is different.

    Re: B & J Serenader Resonator Mandolin 1930s

They are not worth that kind of money, but for $100 they are a lot of fun. And, sound surprisingly metallic, believe it or not. And, some people have gone to the trouble of "converting" them to...

Re: Nut Slots Cut Too Low

My old trick is just use superglue and not much. No baking soda or bone dust needed. Cut a small strip of paper or index card to use as an applicator. Mask off everything else. Just carefully...
  7. Re: What's the weirdest MUSICAL thing you've ever done?

My cousin had a similar story in the 60's. He was friends with a popular local teenage garage band who was gigging a lot. Their organ player quit and they said he could join the band even though he...

    Re: Lyon an Healy?

I have often wondered who bids and buys from shopgoodwill.com. I now know. I've always considered it a bigger gamble than other online instrument sights -- both condition-wise and who is actually...
  9. Re: Live From Here - Is There a Better Music Show ANYWHERE?

Probably a generational thing, too......kinda like the ol' Thile vs Monroe debate......

(on guitar forums they have John Mayer vs BB King debates.....believe it or not....)

    Re: B & J Serenader Resonator Mandolin 1930s

There is a little piece that is missing from the cover plate that goes over the bridge.

    Re: Mandolin Close Ups

Don't take this the wrong way, but you've spent a lot of time on this buzzing issue, IMHO. There are basically 3 or 4 causes and that's it. We can obsess until it drives us crazy. If it is still...

    Re: "Refurbished Gibson"

Years ago I was looking around a pawn shop at their guitars. A nice lady who was the owner told me that she had a couple other nicer guitars "in the back" if I wanted to see them. I said "sure." ...

    Re: Amy Helm chord form

She is not being mic'd and there is a studio musician behind a curtain playing the real chord.....just a guess!.......:mandosmiley:

Actually, there seems to be a whole school of hillbilly guitar...
  14. Re: Live From Here - Is There a Better Music Show ANYWHERE?

I still remember those first A Prairie Home Companion shows and how corny they were -- in a very good, happy way. It may have been the first intentionally ironic show produced ever, not sure, but 35...

    Re: Gibson A1 (requesting information)

I hope you can understand why the question seems awkward, odd, or even a little nosy.

Life has peculiar situations like this, of course. I was once "watching" and using a friend's auto while he...
  16. Re: Live From Here - Is There a Better Music Show ANYWHERE?

What!? Thile uses a tablet holder? Music stand? That's cheating! I thought the man had talent!

No wonder it is on the radio! Curses!, foiled again by the video camera........

  19. Re: Live From Here - Is There a Better Music Show ANYWHERE?

I know how you feel. At some point, I had to let it go and just enjoy the music. At various times I've had similar feelings about Dwight Yoakam, Marty Stuart, Jack White, Harry Connick, Jr., and...

Re: What's the deal with Vintage F4s?

I would say it was Bill Monroe's influence more than Loar's. Sure, the Loar F5 had to exist for Monroe to play one, but without Monroe it would just be a great instrument and considerably cheaper. ...

Gruhn's Guide shows that number for the years 1965 and 1968. They reused the numbers during certain years. Posting pictures might help narrow it down.

    Re: Marty Stuart's ex-Loar?

Is this a common practice? Loosening the strings to reduce stress? On what? The glue joints? The wood?

Never heard of it, except when shipping......

    Any ideas?

    Re: Resonator mandolin repair

Both Ishibashi Music and Woodman Guitar are very well known vintage dealers in Japan. I have dealt with both of them personally.
