    Re: Mandolin upgrade suggestions

I have a Flatiron and a Sumi. Both are excellent if you can find one. The Sumi in particular was made by Eiichi Sumi to the Loar specs and is an excellent bluegrass mandolin. Good luck.

You should be able to find a very nice A style Flatiron for that price. Excellent mandolins with an excellent reputation. Flatirons can definitely qualify as “keepers”, and may even be the heirloom...
  5. Re: Recommendations for a quality but affordable mandolin

+1 for a Flatiron A style. I found a really nice 1991 Performer A several years ago for $1K. Excellent build, playability and sound.

    Re: Mando flatiron buying advice.

If you continue to look for a Flatiron, it will help you to know that the first two numbers in the serial number indicate the year the instrument was made, hence it’s age. For example the serial...

My mandolins always stay in their cases. My guitars are on sturdy stands simply because of where I keep them.

Re: Trying to make a modest leap...

Absolutely check the classifieds right NOW. There is a Kentucky 1000 and a Flatiron Performer A both for $950 (nfi). Both are excellent mandolins spot on your budget. Good luck.
  18. Re: Newbie wondering about "The Loar" F-style mando quality

For $500 you should be able to find a gently used Eastman 315, which, IMO, would be a better mandolin in terms of build quality and possibly resale value. My first mandolin was a Loar 220, and my...
