Thanks. Those are more basic than I'm looking for.
I'm working on Giovale's "Idilio Primavirile" A beautiful piece.

    Repertoire suggestions?

    Hi everyone.
I met a classical guitarist at a family gathering
and would like to work up music for next year.
We are amateur musicians - maybe "high intermediate"
    describes our level :^) I'm...
  5. Re: What's the weirdest MUSICAL thing you've ever done?

Strung up a 3 story building from basement to ceiling with aluminum wires for an
art school project. Through the stair well. Played it with a big home made bow strung
    with fishing line. It sounded...

Re: Transposing tunes composed for horns

That was a funny quote from Svend: "B major has five sharps and is a non-existent key in jazz".
What a great musician he was. I was friends with him.
Will send you a personal message here on...

Re: Transposing tunes composed for horns

Learning to play in F Bb Eb etc is a good idea. I have a couple of thoughts.
First, if you like swing music, Django and Stephane generally played in G C F and
associated minor keys. There's a lot...

Western Swing is a good destination for electric mandolins :)

    Re: Need some advice.

This probably goes against the prevailing opinions here.
You can play mandolin in an "oldies" pop band but its very hard to fit in rhythmically.
In my experience Bluegrass "chop" chords don't work...
  14. Re: What instrument is the hardest? My experience

    The hardest:
    Fluba
    Singing Ringing Tree
    Cross-Grainger Kangaroo-Pouch Tone-Tool
    The Great Stalacpipe Organ
    Pyrophone Organ
    Hyperbass Flute
    Hornucopian dronepipe
    Aquaggaswack
    Sandata ng lolo...
  15. Re: Check this out: Dana Mohr Plays Huckleberry Hornpipe

I'm hearing a little of Frank Wakefield too, though they don't phrase the same.
His New Camptown Races has a nice chord solo. It starts after the guitar melody at 7:02
  16. Check this out: Dana Mohr Plays Huckleberry Hornpipe

This is from Howard Yearwood's "Saddleback" 1979 LP on Ridge Runner. Mohr seems
stylistically ahead of his time here, and plays a unique triplet-driven mandolin solo.
From what I remember he won...

How do you put the violin under your chin with a bow-tie on your neck?
I can't even play wearing a regular tie.
  21. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

I play 5 string electric mandolin BECAUSE it has an "electric guitar-like" sound. Its useful to be able to play that sound, [and it has its own tradition of fantastic playing: Tiny Moore, Johnny...

I actually won a first place "Banjo Other" category in a contest playing a choro piece.
The neck was warped like a cereal bowl ;) Its now detached so I'm not tempted to play it.

Why do people want anything they desire? Even if you aren't a performer, why not have a high quality mandolin if you can afford it? I think we should allow people to do that. :disbelief:
