  2. Current pros looking to teach lessons during down time

    Hey Everybody,

Bummer so many great musicians are out of work right now, but on the bright side many folks are looking for students right now to pass the time and pay the bills. I have a lesson...
  3. Re: Playing with others of different skill levels

Keep playing with both and over time you will start gravitating toward the more advanced group, atleast that's how I progressed. I think it is important to take time to just listen and try to find...

    Re: Tone Dexter users?

Are you implying that everybody is going to get rid of their pre-amps and pickup'ed mandolins in favor of a Zeta mandolin? It will be nice to have that option, but I don't think it will have such an...

Re: In praise of mandolin builder Matt Ruhland

I currently own a Duff, Kimble and Ruhland A. The Duff has been my main axe for a few years and people always remarked on how loud it is. The Ruhland is quite a bit louder than the Duff, like scary...

I have a an Adi topped Duff and Adi topped Heiden, both fantastic instruments by fantastic builders with plenty of power, volume and great tone. But, my loudest instrument by far is my Sitka topped...
  10. Re: Gibson Master Model vs. Ellis F5 with all of his highest opti

At that price point may as well fly to Nashville and play mandolins til you find the one you can't put down. Price wise that is not that much compared to how much you are investing in the instrument....

Re: Please help! Fixing my pick direction

Doing that exercise daily will re-train your muscle memory. You can do the "ghost notes" but if that is too challening you can play a quarter note as 2 1/8 notes while you are re-training your hand....

    Right hand cure-all exercise

Here is the right hand cure-all exercise I use. (Not really a cure-all, but it covers some bases) I learned it from Zak Borden, a great teacher, and I am sure Mike Marshall does it in finger busters,...

As others have noted, its going to be all about the right hand, especially if you have fiddle experience and knowledge of what to do with the left hand. For my money the best way to improve right...

    Re: Jeff Austin Health Fund

Rip to Jeff Austin. Hopefully he has found peace. I can say that Jeff and Yonder were an influence on my becoming a mandolin player. I also met my future wife at a Yonder show.

I wouldn't ask to play other people's instruments. I think the approach of talking about instruments and hoping they offer you it is best practice. I pretty much will offer up my instrument to anyone...

Are you faster than when you started out? If so, keep doing what you are doing and you will continue to get faster. There is no magic pill to getting better other than playing + time.
