Well, I guess I have to go back in there and look again. It's very similar to that without the back. But it looked new. I was amazed how good it sounded.

No it's not a banjo mandolin. It was all wood, perfectly round and flat, no hole with an open back. Some kind of specialty mandolin. Imagine a flatiron mandolin without a hole and no back.
They had a mandolin at a local store that had no hole, was flat, open back and perfectly round. I would ask them about it but I'm afraid if I go back I might buy it. It seemed to me to sound really...
What is wrong with missing notes? I mean that seriously. Making "mistakes" has taught me how to make my mistakes sound like an intentional variation. Missing a note here or there could just be me...
That old book was actually pretty cool and worth a look. Some of the left hand things it touches on are similar in violin lessons (obviously you don't hold it the same).
I took violin lessons...
I have one of these and I replaced the first string with a heavier string, probably some kind of mandolin G string, and I tune it either DAEB or CGDA. It sounds sort of like a little banjo more than...
I played a $100 mandolin for a decade. Then I decided to get a better one (at $750 I hoped it was better.) People said hey that's great, you deserved a better mandolin. But honestly I couldn't really...
Maybe I could buy your tossed TI C string for my octave banjolin that I want to tuned to EBF#C#. Maybe it would work as the E string for me.
Actually it's really only the G string that is a little bit wonky tuned this way. I can also tune it to F and use the 2nd fret with a capo. Or heck, I should try tuning just the G string up to F so...
If money was no object and tone the only goal I would practice all day instead of working.
I carried a McNally Strumstick on a plane in its soft case (which unlike the picture in the link was green and has no giant logo on it). TSA did not hassle me. They asked me what it was and I just...
I love my octave banjolin. I think it sounds nice. I think accordions are great--a band in a box. The trumpet player in my high school jazz band had his choice of girls.
Would there be an appropriate weight of strings, at least the lower two, to use to tune my octave banjolin down to EBF#C#? It's a bit buzzy on especially the string tuned to E (the G string...
I bought a used Gold Tone Octajo. It is essentially an octave banjolin or if you prefer, a double-course tenor banjo.
I find it easier to play because I do not have to press down so hard to get a...
I went to a house concert to see a trio of a fiddler, a mandolinist (who was the featured performer) and a cellist. Only the mandolin was amplified. She played either in front of a mic or an electric...
I struggled (and still do) with fiddle for years but was able to play old-time music on mandolin pretty easily. Because it actually sounded good when I played mandolin, I became a respected and...
It's not so much I want to mute it for quietness, I just want it to have that plunky sound.
With the capo on the third fret it doesn't feel too big anymore.
I recorded myself. I'm not a musical...
And my ukulele capo just barely fits. Now I can tune it down and put the capo on so it's just a bit easier to play. I put it on the third fret.
Now to figure out should I take the resonator off?...
There is absolutely no way to carry it on my scooter. I put my fiddle in a backpack but this thing has a 12" wide body and doesn't even fit in my biggest backpacking backpack. Jeez, one more goddam...
If somehow you have your mandolin tuned in 4ths like a ukulele instead of in 5ths like a mandolin, then it still wouldn't sound the same as a uke. And I can't imagine how on earth you would tune up...
Here is a video of a guy who really knows how to play playing a gigantic thing called an Octajo. The scale length is over 22". I just bought one. Watch his left elbow in this clip. In a second or two...
I borrowed a car to go see my dad and in a town half way there I bought it.
I am really concerned the only way to move this thing around my own town is going to be by borrowing the car every time....
I have a soprano uke and the distance between frets is the same as my mandolin. I have other instruments with greater distance, including an octave mandolin, and although it is difficult to go from B...
It doesn't have a strap at all (yet--I have a strap somewhere), but even with a strap, if you are sitting down to play it, it's going to be on your lap. I kind of like it without the resonator but...
I just got an Octajo used from Craigslist. It's like a combination octave mandolin and banjo. It has metal strings, but apparently you can also put nylon strings on. It also has a resonator.
It's...
