Re: Flatt and Scruggs on Netflix

....for what MY memory serves me,...the above is incorrect inre to at least three mentioned: can't remember seeing either Lambert , or Charlie Bailey with oval-hole ?
  2. Re: Curly Seckler and the mandolin? What gives?

...I'm afraid the record will show that Curly's singing outshone his picking !...Curly was mostly a 'tremolo' picker...as opposed to someone who picks the individual notes that make up a melody !

    Re: Chop Questions

...you don't mean the "major chop is on the (down) beat" do you ? The proper chop is on beats 2 and 4 , in 4/4 time, and on beats 2 and 3 in 3/4 time !...and for the record....-NEVER chop "up" !

    Re: Chop Questions

..."chopping" should be taken very seriously !...a bluegrass mandolinist's playing should consist of about 85% chop to 15% pick !....always use a 4-fingered chop when possible, never less than 3...
  8. Re: Help! I can't hear the beat when I play a break

...when saying "pick-up notes"...-you really mean 'lead-in' notes,...or in piano talk they are called 'grace' notes !...google up MAPLE VALLEY BOYS if interested .
  9. Re: Help! I can't hear the beat when I play a break

...perhaps you haven't spent enough time listening to tapes and records, watching videos ,etc.,...and the old saying,..."if you can't HUM it , -you can't PLAY it" always applies !
  10. Re: Help! I can't hear the beat when I play a break

...would NOT recommend "tapping your foot", or 'patting your foot'...it is NOT necessary to be a proficient musician !...learn to keep time WITHOUT doing that !

I think of JR as having ONLY three parts, may see how anyone COULD come up with four, but what you are calling 'part' three, I consider to be the tail end of part two, and NOT a bona fide 'part' in...
