Re: $199.00 solid F style mandolin

Fabulous. I don't see how this piece could sound any better regardless of what mandolin it was played on. To be honest if you had told me this had been recorded by Mr. T or G using their Loars/Dudes...

You're guitar playing friend should be able to do this no problem...providing he knows how to change guitar strings ( just do one at at time )

Pasha, you're not the only one who doesn't change their string regularly. I heard a story about George Harrison and his famous Gretsch. After a number of years of playing he was having difficulty...

Don't be put off by the place of manufacture. Have you ever seen the quality in an old Ming dynasty vase? Etc etc

Northfields are up there with the best.

Nice playing, well done. The only advice I would offer is be careful you don't knock that Strat over as the headstock appears to be leaning on the wall :)

I have both radiused and flat board mandolins. I don't find any significant difference when playing them. I tend to play my flat board more that my radiused (but only because I prefer that...

Re: Lots of notes vs. defining the melody

If you're playing in a jam or with a band, play to make the others sound better. (As everybody else should be doing) If you do this it makes no difference if you shred or play subtly...it'll sound...

Dem, I think it's cool that you have made your quest so public. it's a great thread and I'm enjoying it immensely.

  15. Re: FlatIron F models, help me out with a concise list

    Daryl, I have a 2001 Flatiron Festival F. I initially bought a Northfield NF5s as I couldn't find a Flatiron anywhere in the UK.

Had I managed to find a Flatiron before I bought the NF I would...

Re: New Mandolin, Weird Shape on Top

There's nothing to worry about, those lines are the wood grain. I can't see any "bear claw" but that's usually a bit of a bonus...and can be more expensive. Enjoy the new mandolin

After therapy I would buy the Apitius (keeping the Eastman as a beater) because:

They're made by a great luthier
    You won't lose out financially
    They have...
