Re: Bowl back mandola - maker?

There are examples of some really fine Regal pearl engraving in the Carlin book. I can't place the overall shape of any part of the bowl with the mandola examples shown though. That volute should...

Re: Bowl back mandola - maker?

Jim or Mick might be able to identify the builder by the shape of the bowl. They seem to have that gift.

Re: Bowl back mandola - maker?

The scratch-plate (Pickguard) is very similar in shape to some branded Regal bowlbacks and Bob Carlin's book does list catalog pages for Regal bowlback mandolas. The inlay and engraving on the...

Re: Help dating an Army Navy special

If you haven't got a copy of Joe Spann's book "Spann's Guide To Gibson 1902-1941" I highly recommend putting it on your list of things to buy. It is a treasure trove of information about dating...

    Re: Harmony Monterey H410 Rescue

One of your biggest challenges will be undoing the former "repairs". I think NickR had the date right and that ad from Harmony was a real find as it was the back side of a Kalamazoo catalog page I...

    Re: Don Williams

I've been a fan since his folkie days. His songs never seem over produced and that mandolin is just pleasant.

    Re: Help Identifying a Case

Elderly and a few others sold those "Made in Canada" cases for years with the tweed covering and the shag carpet interior.
  9. Re: New Eastman won't stay in tune - bad pegs?

On any given day in the entire universe only three mandolins are in tune and David Grisman owns two of them.

    Re: Mandolin Archive Taking Submissions?

Those updates are being posted by News Fetcher, a Mandolin Cafe bot. As far as the Mandolin Archive, the owner of that site is a regular here.

    Re: Can of air

I'm in an industry that embraced canned air for decades. I think all of us just use a small vacuum now.

    Re: Harmony

In the early 60's Harmony instruments were sold new in pawn shops in Portland, Oregon. It was apparently their choice for a dealer network in that town. They were cheap and since we were all coming...

    Re: Harmony

It might be a new line for Sweetwater but these have been around for a few years. It's just a name but at least they have attempted to duplicate some models. Some of us that grew up when this was all...
  18. Re: Need some help to assess the value of a restored 1972 F5 Gibs

That appears to be finish checking. Those "cracks" should be in the finish.

I'm married to a French woman.

Can you get a closer shot of the back of the headstock?

Re: Lovely Regal Bowlback & Leather Case

If you can get a clear shot of the labels it should ID it as a Wulschner instrument built in Indianapolis.

Re: Lovely Regal Bowlback & Leather Case

I had one pass though several years ago that was just like this one. I didn't get a quarter of that price back then. You're right about the price.
  22. Re: Need some help to assess the value of a restored 1972 F5 Gibs

Could you post pictures of the mandolin? It is very difficult to assess an instrument's value without seeing it.

    Re: Odd vintage Gibson electric

The mandolin was built by Gibson the electronics weren't. I also suspect it was strung lefty when it was electrified.

Re: No love for old Martins?

I didn't see Targ & Dinner in Mugwumps either. I'm guessing they were a distributor in the Chicago area.
