Re: Should I buy a Charango?

    Yes. Looks fun.

(If you are asking for anything other than enthusiastic encouragement, this may be the wrong forum).

Re: I don't like F styles. Anyone else?

Would the need (or perceived need) for a tone-guard differ between an A and an F?? I don't use a tone-guard but my understanding is that the purpose is to hold the sound chamber away from the body...

    Re: Rva

Nope. Roanoke might be referred to as The 'Noke, Big Lick, or the Star City, but I've never seen it denoted Rva, which has always been Richmond. But that might all fall under local knowledge.

    Re: Charity Shop Donation Help

It's a neopolitan (Naples, Italy) mandolin from 1906. Maker is Giovanni de Meglio.

My google skills are showing that these, in good condition, have sold recently for around $300 (and then down...

    Re: Why Mandolin?

Wanted to try something different and learn an instrument at almost 50yo.

    Too many guitar players.

Liked a bunch of bands that featured mandolin and thought it looked and sounded fun.

    Had...

    Re: 11 (eleven!) string thing?

Pretty confidant that I would label this a Bolivian Bandurria. Scroll down to the entry for Bandurria, Peruvian and you can see it is an alternate name, and since we know the provenance...

The instrument maker is Daniel Zola, or Daniel Zola Pacolla of Bolivia. Is this blog you can see him holding a guitar with the same label:

    Re: 11 (eleven!) string thing?

My best preliminary guess is that this is in the bandurria family, something like a tenor laud bandurria. Bandurrias commonly have six courses in Spain, but often have four if they are from South...
  9. Re: Bequeathing instruments to charity in a will

This is a nice idea. I am presuming that what you want to do is for somebody to take your instruments and play them, not take your instruments and sell them (to fund some other charitable mission). ...

    Re: Online Mandolin Lesson suggestions

My local roots music school has online group classes and one-on-one instruction available and a lot of outstanding teachers.

Here's an older MC thread on Larry Hopkins, but there isn't much there: https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/threads/110103-Anyone-familiar-with-Larry-Hopkins-mandolins

There is a little bit of...
  12. Re: When did you realize mandolin was your primary instrument?

I decided when I bought my mandolin and started to play it. I don't really play anything else. I have a guitar and a banjo and a saz, but I will pick them up and mess with them from time to time,...

    Re: Garcia guitar Grisman mandolin

The Garcia before the Dead project is really worthwhile if you want to deep dive into the roots of Dead music. Much better (to me) as a historical study than strictly as a musical project.

    They...

Re: What is Jeff Austin using here?

I asked about Jeff's setup in a fan group that I am in. I am not an electric player and don't have any real knowledge of pedals or what most of this means, so I can't answer any follow-up questions,...

    Re: Garcia guitar Grisman mandolin

Bobby and the Midnights was one of Bobby's earliest side projects (he has had a lot of them over the years). They did Big Iron quite a few times.

Re: What is Jeff Austin using here?

Jeff bought Drew Emmitt's Nugget. In a 2011 interview he said he was using a Baggs pickup (so it may have been the same pickup).

    I miss Jeff.
