Re: Best live gig setup for mandolin/guitar

I use a Morley A-B-C pedal. The one issue is it will make an audible POP if you don't mute when switching channels. I use my tuner pedal to mute when I switch instruments.
  3. Micing my Farmers Market/Retirement Home Bluegrass band

Hi, I'm in a bluegrass music club. We get together for weekly jams and fun, purely acoustic. Most of the folks have very little experience in live performance with sound reinforcement. At 55 I'm...

    Replacing Tuners on 1930's Mandos

I have a 1930's Stahl banjolin and the same age Regal resonator mandolin. The tuners on these old instruments are not so good - no bushings, posts are very short, not very precise, don't hold very...

    Re: Zero Glide Nut System

Also not trying to offend, but if your mind is already set on doing this based on the mfrs literature, why even ask about it here?

Re: DIY Speed Neck? Advice Needed

0000 steel wool works good to remove the gloss without taking off a lot of stain or any wood. On a thick finish both steel wool and fine sandpaper plug up pretty quick.

    I speed-necked all my...

    Re: Zero Glide Nut System

I've replaced a few nuts and never came across one where both sides perpendicular to the strings are square with respect to the bottom; that is the bottom of the nut slot is always slanted. So...

    Re: Song Writers???

I'm not much of a songwriter. But engaging, meaningful lyrics are the most important part of a song to me. I've been inspired for over 40 years by songwriters like John Prine, Steve Goodman, Guy...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

Again, its the unmatched output impedance of the piezo (1 to 10 million ohms) with the input impedance of the amp or PA (a few thousand ohms). This is basic signal path stuff that applies to radio,...
  11. Re: Balancing practice between two instruments...

When I started mandolin 11 years ago I found my guitar and fiddle playing improved. There are many multi-instrumentalists out there at the amateur and pro level who sound great on eveything they...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

I've never used one of these stand alone phantom power supplies (I use a RedEye these days which runs on phantom or 9 volt battery). Would this work if your board/amp doesn't provide it?

Re: Best mandolin wall stand, e.g. hook etc?

When I finished my basement I used 2 x 4 framing to create 24" spaces for rigid foam insulation. When I decided to make it my music room, I used spax screws to mount cedar trim boards to the studs. ...

    Re: I Don't Do Tab

What if there were people capable of reading notation and tablature and could play by ear and improvise? Everytime I read one of these "degree-in-music-but-lost-without sweet music" posts I think...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

Ummm, no. 1 megohm = 1 million ohms. Just like 1 kilohm = 1000 ohms.

    Re: Go To Jams Now!

This is also the single best piece of advice I can offer. Start playing with others right away. I played violin in orchestra daily from 5th through 12th grades. I was pretty much a play-alone...
  18. Re: Mando Acquisition Syndrome and the Mandocello

I went down this path from the same starting point (violin, then guitar, then mandolin). I tried to cheap out and bought a Michael Kelly octave plus for my first foray into Mandolins of Unusual...

    Re: Bridge "leaning" toward peghead

Couple things - I always lube the nut and bridge slots with nut sauce or at least graphite. I use a jig to fit the bridge feet to the top. In the case of my 10 string Hardanger viola the height of...

It's a regular 16.5" viola (with a high E) strung with Sensicore Octave strings. I use a heavier Incredibow on it. It really rattles my jaw on the low notes.
