  1. Re: A Georgian Panduri (ფანდური) I built

    Trio Mandili rocks!

I found a very nice-looking panduri on ShopGoodwill of all places, with what appears to be a more Western-style chromatic fretboard. I actually haven't taken it out of the...

Re: Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass

There would have been more, but the mandolin was accidentally buried in whipped cream during a photo shoot.
  3. Re: Was the mandolin played in traditional folk before Bill Monro

It's certainly an important instrument in African-American string band music. White old-time string bands like the Skillet Lickers used it, but less frequently.
  4. Re: Lyon & Healy Style A #1674 1925 - looking for info

I'm looking at Hubert's book right now, and while the caption under this label on p. 110 does indeed say 1925, the text on p. 111 notes that the label was in use from 1922 to 1928. So, the photo on...

Re: Valuing a Gibson by Dr Lori

Well, it could be a 1928 or later A0, in which case the pickguard attachment could be original.

It does surprise me from time to time how woefully ignorant antique dealers can be about musical...

Re: Hilary Hahn: Hearing her live

Re: My Pas Washburn Lyon and Healy mandolin

The case is rather the worse for wear and is missing the original handle ... but that's to be expected, and it has protected the instrument from a good bit of knocking about.

    There's a fair...

Re: Eastman El Rey Video Review

Cool. I didn't notice the pickup being angled on the instrument I reviewed ... so perhaps that adjustment was made after my Fretboard Journal review.

    Re: Suffragette March

This should be everything. Mandocello and mandola parts were published in transposed notation, so I converted them.

I see the actual copyright date is 1910, not 1915.

  11. Re: UK Luthier to build 4 String Solid Body Electric Mandolin

Paul Shippey might take this on.

John Maddock is actively building electrics, often posts them on the Cafe:

No, but I think we'll try to record it at a rehearsal before we forget how to play it.

Re: Lyon & Healy Style C

Don't believe the endpin is original. I've never seen an L&H with an endpin.

Hubert's book has dates for the 3 different headstock styles if you're interested.

A while back a very interesting...

Meet ... the Perfect Mandolin Player.

He's solid. He's smooth. His chops are impeccable. His tone is woody. He's in touch with his roots. There's no questioning his articulation. He may be a little stiff, but on the other hand he'll...

Or give it a few cigarette burns and pour a frappe over it? Maybe laminate a very thin layer of olive wood over the top?
  20. Re: PayPal fraud in prograess (have you smelled this one before)?

Quite so. This was a Reverb ad, and it was not an ad for either of the instruments I have listed on the Cafe at the moment. It certainly wasn't my intention to imply that the buyer contacted me...
  21. Re: What mandolin recordings are definitive to evolving its role?

Indeed ... Celtic mandolin music before there were Celtic mandolins ... evidently one had to get one's instrument from Portugal or Greece at the time.
  22. Re: What mandolin recordings are definitive to evolving its role?

    The Monroe Bros. recordings.
The "classic quintet" postwar Blue Grass Boys recordings with Earl, Lester, Chubby and Cedric.
    Dave Apollon.
    Homer and Jethro.
    Howard Frye.
