  1. Poll: Re: Poll for The Song A Week Social Group Week #198

I think I may be the person who first suggested Washington's March. I first heard it, and learned it, from Tim O'Brien's rendition of it on "Songs from the Mountain." It's a great old time American...

Re: science behind a mandolin "opening up"

It's not science, It's magic. You have to love it to make it sound good. You have to know it to love it. You have to play it to know it. New strings, body heat, a singing heart, instrument as...

    Re: First of May

There's another Irish song called "Colcannon" which is pretty much the same as First of May.
  5. Re: This thread is in re: to the Newell model sale on E-Bay.

Well, at least you know where to find it.
  6. Re: This thread is in re: to the Newell model sale on E-Bay.

I felt like it was an injustice to the builder for it to be going for so little. I wasn't going to bid it to the moon, but I was willing to go considerably higher than $500 or $600.

    I don't think...
  7. Re: This thread is in re: to the Newell model sale on E-Bay.

Interesting thread. I was the winning bidder. I wasn't looking for a mandolin to buy. Just browsing mandolins on auction. The seller referenced a Cafe thread in his ad. I made the $150 bid assuming...

Re: Blacktop going to cafe member

Apparently, the person who put it on Ebay was not Mark. Mark messaged me privately and said (essentially) that he has gone on to other instruments. A serious case of MAS, I think.

Re: Blacktop going to cafe member

I bid on it, initially because I was unwilling to see it sold for cheap. As late as last night bids were still under $400. I placed a bid late in the auction, and won!, for much less than my max...

#87. I think I am the third owner. It will need some new frets one day soon.

  14. Poll: Re: Poll for Song A Week Social Group Week # 51

Also known as Rose Conlee or Rose Conley. The roots of the ballad are very old--- the gist of it is a young man who kills his lover and throws her body in the water-- related to songs called the...

Yeah. I passed on it a couple of times. Then I was kicking myself for not buying that Weber Custom A. Then I looked at it again and spoke to David on the phone. It kind of grew on me and the price...

    Eastman 604 and Grover tuners

This might be of interest. I decided to replace the Schaller tuners on my Eastman 604 with Grover 18:1's. Although this is an A-style mando, the headstock shape calls for F-style tuners....
