Re: Tygh Valley Oregon Bluegrass Jamboree

The ballot picks were not guarded by a mother hen so I’m sure there was fraud. We’re surrounded by banjo players, after all.

I had a pretty constructive time hanging back and playing quietly...

Re: Tygh Valley Oregon Bluegrass Jamboree

Yer right, I blended right in! I spent several hours there today (Friday) and I’ll be back tomorrow. It’s a bigger gathering than I expected and I really enjoyed myself. My wife suggested that I...

My family was all Swedish (I’m all American), a short boat ride from Poland where two of my cousins moved. My brother, near Chicago, married into a Polish immigrant family so all things Polish have...

Re: Tygh Valley Oregon Bluegrass Jamboree

This is great news for me. This is my first year of mandolin and it’ll be my first time at Tygh Valley. I’m an old guy with a hat and a mandolin so you’ll be easily able to spot me in that crowd....

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

If the wear was legitimate performance play wear and the instrument was the best among those I’d played I would consider overlooking the wear. If it was artificially “relic’d” so the player could...

    Re: Customs fees?

Officially, yes, you’d be charged import duty on that purchase, although in practice it’s maybe yes, maybe no. Many of us have bought things and they’ve arrived with no duty owed and in other cases...

Re: My First Mandolin- A Keeper or keep looking

I’ve never worried about getting all my money back when I sell an instrument. If the going price exceeds what I paid then I’m golden. If not, I view the difference as the cost of using the instrument...
  12. Re: New player: a lot of pain in the knuckle of my left hand

It sounds like you’re doing most things properly. Q: How tightly do you grip the neck or how hard do you press the strings? CarlM’s method of slowly increasing pressure to learn the right playing...

Re: What Are Some Good Options in the $2-3k range?

Keep an eye open for a Ratliff. I’m just finishing my rookie year on mandolin and I’m really happy with the feel and the sound. When other players at pickers fests have tried my Ratliff they’re...

Re: Song Breakdown for Bill Cheatham

Lotsa staves on that page but if you digest ‘em one at a time before moving to the next you’ll be an official learner post haste. I like how you’ve done this.

Re: Dealing with pokey string ends?

I cut ‘em about 3/8” - 1/2” from the tuning post then give ‘em a downward bend with a long nose plier. Just do it so the end is clear of the peghead surface.

    Re: Eastman MDO305 Octave

  20. Re: How to determine the proper action height for my Irish Bouzou

Re: My mando sounds muted/dulled :-(

You might reconsider the heavy gauge strings. The mandolin scale length is short and as you play higher pitches the string length gets even shorter. Thicker strings with short vibrating length are...
