Re: Collings mt-1 and mt-2 serial numbers

Regarding Bill Collings-signed labels, I’m not sure when it stopped, but my MT was made in 2013 and has his signature on the label. It’s pretty faint (and very messy) and I’d had the instrument a...

    Re: Eastman MD 614

Mine was a 2006 and was a sort of burgundy wine color. It had a gloss finish, but I actually sanded it off with green scotchbrite and polished it to a nice matte. It looked really cool, and it...

Re: In search of a mandolin...

With that kind of budget, a weekend trip to Nashville to visit all the big dealers is what I would suggest. You would probably leave there with the mandolin of your dreams.

I like GC and wish them well. I’ve been going in there since I was 18 and started playing guitar. Lots of good memories, not just for me but for millions like me. I also don’t go in there...

    Re: New Eastman Factory Videos.

I was in a high-end shop the other day in Dallas with lots of great guitars on the wall (Collings, Santa Cruz, et al). There was one Eastman there in the shop (some type of dread) and it was NICE. ...

Re: Sierra Hull on Steven Colbert

Very unsual/unorthodox vocal style, but wow, what a band he put together (Sierra's playing is flawless, as always)! I also like his old Martin a lot.

    Re: Pickboy “Mandolin” Picks.

I’ve done so much pick trading with folks here that it’s hard to keep up with where I got what and from whom, but the Pickboy mandolin pick remains one of my favorite surprises.

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

I’m hoping to get a set of heavies for my MT from Santa this year. I’ve just about settled on La Bella as my favorite string, but I still want to try some TIs and some Straight Ups at some point.

    Re: Eastman MD 614

I used to own a 505 that sounded small and thin compared to some of the 300 series mandolins I tried in stores, so my experience is that the series number is almost meaningless in the Eastman world...

    Re: Eastman MD 614

I like Eastman mandolins but I don’t get why people don’t just use the nice mandolins they have for live work. Thile (et al) uses a Loar live which is like using a Stradivarius in the violin world. ...

    Adamas (Ovation) Mandocello.

    https://youtu.be/uWSzNWKRu7Y

^^^ Ran across this today. At first I thought it was a guitar conversion but it looks like Adamas made some of these once upon a time. Sounds pretty good too!
  16. Re: What are, celtic-, bluegrass-, classical etc. mandolins?

True enough that any mandolin will do, but to me old music like “Celtic” tunes sounds way better on a flattop, oval-hole mandolin. The thuddy, airy tone just lends itself to the older music IMO.

I'll give you that. I guess I should say that texting _should_ give one the time to choose one's words carefully, etc. That's the way I use it anyway.

I don't remember ever seeing Pickboy picks mentioned here but they are my favorite for mandolin and guitar. They make a ton of different picks but this style is my favorite. YMMV.
