  1. Re: Easy small modification to Eastman 305 fretboard extension

Looks good. For those wanting to do this putting water on the fingerboard before pulling the frets will swell the wood, making the frets tighter in the slots. This most likely will cause more, not...

    Re: What is this part?

I agree with Jim and was just going to post such. It looks like you can loosen the screw and slide it up over the bridge for a mute, and back it off when not needed.

Re: This just came up on Reverb 'The Hogan'

The ad says there are only a few, maybe 5, in the U.S. and this is one. The one in the classifieds was in Germany if I remember. That's if I remember, anybody's guess.

Re: Leaning Toward Old Time Fiddle Tunes

In the old time jams here the appeal of the music is that everyone plays the melody together. Some better players may play more notes, but the melody all the same. Improvising from the melody is...
  7. Re: Should I put a Mandolin Cafe Sticker on my Vintage Lifton Cas

I would consider a vintage Lifton case a little rare, not all Gibson's come with an original case, let alone other vintage mandolins. They will be more rare as time goes on and they deteriorate. I...

Re: Beginner ?ís about changing sound/tone

Also I have found when string are not intonated correctly the will sound brighter/harsher. As others have stated heavier pick and more rounded corner will help.
  10. Re: Finding a strap with holes the right size for my mando.

I like a hole on both ends. Larger for the button, small for the slit. The hole keeps the leather from tearing further over time.

    Re: technique

The better your technique the more feeling you can express, even in a fast piece. Speed and feeling comes with time and being able to incorporate both into a fast piece is technique. Technique is...

Re: Tuners - replace or repair advice

I like the Rubner machines, fair cost. nice smooth tuners. Not sure they have the F style in stock yet as they were reworking them a while ago. In the meantime I would put a drop of super glue on the...

  14. Re: Should I put a Mandolin Cafe Sticker on my Vintage Lifton Cas

Sue I personally don't like stickers on cases, and would never put one on a vintage case. There must be someplace you can put the cafe sticker, car?
  15. Re: what glue to use on 70yo mando w/ previous repairs?

Another benefit of hide glue is if it opens down the road it's easier the fix than with any other glue.

Re: Tailpiece busted - is this normal?

I usually get a stainless steel tailpiece like Mike recommends. Different source, but in stainless they are much stronger. Haven't had one of them fail so far.
  17. Re: Finding a strap with holes the right size for my mando.

If it is too small you can cut a slit, if it doesn't have one already, from the center of the hole toward the mandolin side of the strap. It works best to punch a small hole where the slit will end...

My BC 35 measures .035", the TF100 Wegen measures ..040", I thin the Wegen to .032". I would have to convert that to mm, but Jill says the BC35 is .89mm. Different material different sound. I am sure...

    Re: Pick Question

A thinner pick may indeed be louder as it will give you a brighter sound and may seem louder. For me it all depends on the mandolin. I have mandolins that I use a thin pick on and it sounds great...

Re: A banjo album that deserves wider recognition

Adam is great, we have played his music on our radio show many times. I love the banjo sound he is getting on this recording.

Another great banjo album from decades ago is "That Old Gut Feeling"...
