    Re: Kentucky 950B Black face

OP was asking about an A model. Eastman makes one — MD404. I’ve never seen one from Kentucky.

    Re: Who?

I get people telling me I look like Tom Petty. Unfortunately, no one's ever told me I sound like him.

Back to guitar after mandolin break

Iíve been a daily guitar player for years, typically playing at least an hour a day. I got a mandolin about a year ago. I upgraded my mandolin recently and have been devoting more and more of my...

    Re: Northfield mandolins

I love it. Sounds great, feels great, and is super fun to play. The varnish finish and Nugget tailpiece are two appointments that I especially like. I went through a guitar upgrade process over a...

    Re: Northfield mandolins

I was wondering that too. I've read a ton of Northfield threads here (leading to my acquisition of a Model M), and I don't recall ever hearing about any finish issues. I can say that the varnish...
  8. Re: Different picks for different instruments

It's pretty hard for anyone to tell you what to do, since we all have different taste. I'm a fairly new mando player/long-time guitar player too, but I much prefer a thicker pick on the mandolin...
  9. Re: Ebay Ratliff Mandolin Ads - Why is there little interest?

As a seller, it would be tough for me to accept "I don't like how it sounds" as the sole reason for a return. I think it's impossible to ascertain in 24-48 hours whether an instrument "sounds good",...

My Northfield Model M, which I've had for about a month now. Love it love it love it! It has a unique (for this model) burst and top binding. Single piece back. I don't know...

    Kentucky KM-270 (will probably sell)
    Northfield Model M

I decided to upgrade after about a year with the Kentucky. I love the Northfield, which I've had for about a month now. I haven't listed...
  12. Re: Why are good mandolins more expensive than good guitars?

It stands to reason that a carved instrument would be more expensive than a flattop. Still difficult to generalize, though. The $900-$1,000 Eastman guitars Iíve played seem pretty equal in terms of...

Re: Shout out for Ronny Harrison straps

Yeah, it looks like he supplies the same strap to various companies stamped with their logos. Mine looks like the one pictured above, and Iíve seen the same thing on Banjo Benís site and elsewhere. ...

Shout out for Ronny Harrison straps

I just received a Ronny Harrison strap that I ordered through the Northfield store. Iíve always found it difficult to find guitar and mando straps that I really love, but I donít need to look any...

    Re: Northfield love

Congrats! Iíve been playing my new Northfield Model M for a week now, and Iím loving it more every day. Hats off to Northfield. The build quality is outstanding, and itís just a delight to play.
  16. Re: Going out of the country...personal item/carry-on?

Iíve carried an 00-sized guitar in a Hiscox case on probably two dozen flights over the past 5 years, including international flights, and Iíve been able to carry it on in all but two flights. But,...

Iíll work on some videos ó Iím experimenting with my recording setup. I like the darker burst too, but I also really like the standard Model M finish, and this burst was consistent with that color...

Oh, I totally agree. I would just quibble somewhat with the specific price points that were mentioned.

    Re: New Northfield Model M

I think the headstock looks cool, too. But itís not actually bound. Itís a painted line along the edge, which creates a nice effect.
  23. Re: A newbie player looking for an affordable entry level mandoli

I agree with the general point, but differ in some of the specifics. My KM-270 cost me $320.00, and is easily comparable in quality to any sub-$500 guitar. I suppose ďdecentĒ is subjective, as is...
  24. Re: A newbie player looking for an affordable entry level mandoli

At that price range, those are probably good options. Like you, Iíve played guitar for years, and about a year ago decided to check out the mandolin. I got a Kentucky KM-270 at a good holiday...

    Re: New Northfield Model M

The vibe and feel I get from it is sort of similar to the feel I get from my beloved 00-18 guitar. The Northfieldís build quality is nicer though. (Not that I have many complaints about the Martin.)
