    Thanks to Cumberland Acoustics

Needed a new bridge for the 1935 Kalamazoo KM-21. The top has caved and the stock bridge just looked silly with the saddle jacked up so high. Tried a no name bridge, but knew I could do better....
  2. Re: Why are good mandolins more expensive than good guitars?

Interesting. Never really thought of my Collings as a third world instrument. But, there you go. As I said earlier, many folks do not consider what I own good. (And yes, I do realize a good mandolin...
  3. Re: Why are good mandolins more expensive than good guitars?

And depends on what one considers "good". There are stores that consider a good guitar one that starts at $5,000. Have played many gigs on acoustics that cost under $2,000.

    Similarly, my most...

    Re: UPS rant

Thankfully, my CA bridge was just delayed. Finally showed up yesterday. Installed last night. Happy picking soon followed.

Re: Like this site but for guitar....

Am a member of UMGF. Rarely check it anymore. Same with the AGF. Am probably a member of a half dozen other instrument pages that I never check.

When I was exclusively playing guitar, used to be...

    Re: Left-Handed Players

Another lefty who plays righty. At this point in my life, have come to realize it's a more accurate description to say I'm a right handed person who writes and uses eating utensils left handed. All...

    Re: UPS rant

Been having a lot of bad luck myself with couriers. USPS has had things bounce between cities on the east coast before being delivered here (Minnesota). The CA bridge I ordered that should have been...

    Re: Tuner...not Tuners

Have most of them. At home, Peterson HD. When playing out with others either TC Electronics or Snark. I find the black Snarks work well for mandolin.

I always final tune pairs by ear.

    Re: New Northfield Model M

Very nice looking mando. Was thinking about trying to order one before getting the Collings MT. The bound headstock is a really nice touch on that one.

Re: Where are the Eastman OMs?

I've seen them show up here in the Classifieds and occasionally on Reverb.com Haven't been on the latter recently, so not sure if there are any there right now.

There do seem to be less of them...

Re: Don't let those mandolins get thirsty

Yup. Got my humidifiers out and in each instrument case right when the first cold snap hit around here.
  13. Re: Gibson Master Model A9 vs Vintage Gibson A9 (1930s)

That's an early 1930's Gibson A-00. The later version had F holes like the A-9. While I like vintage Gibson instruments, for most folks the better deal would be the A-9. The A-00 of that time period...

Re: SKB Case for 1918 Gibson A Mandolin?

Haven't tried the SKB. I do have a Road Runner from GC https://www.guitarcenter.com/Road-Runner/RRMAM-ABS-Molded-A-Mandolin-Case.gc

Use it with my 1929 A Jr. The neck rest is in the perfect spot...

    Is this a refinished top?

    https://www.musicgoround.com/product/41119-S000012126/used-kentucky-km1500-mandolin

Was just looking this morning and saw this Kentucky KM1500. Looks like a natural or possibly white finished top...
  17. Re: Import Flatiron Festival vs Eastman MD515

Personally, the Eastman should be a better instrument. They've been building and evolving for a number of years. An Eastman will also keep some of it's value if (or when) you decide to upgrade again...

    Re: Best Armrest

Really like the feel of the McClung the best. Soliver makes good ones, too. The Cumberland edge is too sharp to be comfortable with my forearm. Don't know why that is. Might be better if I reshaped...

Re: What strings for Gibson F4 (1911)?

Have Mangan Monel lights on my KM-21. I think they'd be a good choice for an F4. Really brings out a nice tone on this instrument. Been getting a lot of compliments from others about it.
  20. Re: A model: Adding a strap button to the heel.

My preference is on the heel. But haven't switched all mine over. And won't on at least one as it's too rare. But it's your instrument and you can do what you want to it.

Good points. I always am striving to play better. Whether notes or technique.

Re: Red spruce versus Engleman (MT/MT2)

I have an MT, but have been able to try a couple of MT2 models with Italian spruce. There is a difference. And I think the MT2 is a better instrument. Although it is much more expensive. Am still...

    Re: Kentucky KM630S on ShopGoodwill

In the 3rd photo, looks light a light line where the heel graft would be. Wonder if it fell over and the joint gave way? Still would need to be reglued, but maybe easier than a full neck reset.

  25. Re: Gibson Ricky Skaggs Distressed Master Model - My New Mandolin

A beautiful looking mandolin. And what amazingly well done aging. Does look to be a very special instrument. Glad it's out of a closet collection and into the hands of a player. Enjoy.
