Re: Major scales? why different ways?

It never hurts to get a little formal instruction in the beginning, if only Youtube videos from fellows like Mike Marshall, Chris Thile, Don Julio or Pete Martin. Fixing bad habits always takes...

Re: Gibson F5-L 1991, what do i need to know

Might be useful to have your hands on one. Mileage varies and so do mandos.

Re: Heat gun in steel pipe?

I used a copper pipe with a rig like that many years ago.

I’m surprised you can still buy those heating elements, they’re pretty dangerous.

    Re: Moveable chords

People think and play differently, trying to generate different sounds. But learning chords especially movable shapes, seems to me to be based on triads and I think that’s where beginning chord...

    Re: Moveable chords

Well gentlemen, doubling a note in a chord seems like a waste of a string and a finger. Can’t even say it’s no part of nuthin :)

    Re: Moveable chords

This is important. As I went a round the circle of fifths with the exercise I described above, it didn't really prepare me for comping in tunes with rapid chord changes. Its more useful to play...

Re: New Player at age 63

Congratulations! I started at 63 as well.

Lots of players with large hands play ‘normal’ width mandolins, including Mike Marshall and Adam Steffey. A large hand has advantages and...

    Re: Moveable chords

Four note chords are pretty unnecessary. I believe Jethro advocated for triads almost exclusively.

Learn the 223 shape, ie root in the bass, 233, third in the bass and 245, fifth in the bass. Or...

Re: Defining the scroll for an F-Style

I had the great pleasure of having Tom Ellis point out how the scroll appears to defy logic, ie, it looks at first glance that the sides widen at the scroll, by pointing out that the back and top are...

Re: Mandolin As A New Direction

I understand your decision, but I live with a different view. After 35 years of leaving the guitars in their cases, I took up mandolin at 63, and have not become the player I initially aspired to...

I agree on both counts and certainly hope no one gets hurt in either their hobby or profession. Haste and it’s inherently poor judgment have caused many injuries. Thinking it can’t happen to you is...
