    Re: Modified Rogue RM-100A

Part of the "learning curve" is avoiding something more expensive that you would consider doing this kind of job to. If it needs it as bad as you think this Rogue did, then best to keep on looking...

A bit of lipstick on a pig but you did a fine job Yeet. Good on you and I bet it sounds way better too.

  4. Re: Help!!! Sanding High Gloss Down to "Satin"

Marty's advice is on point. Have a look at a Lowden guitar if you can. Their "satin" finish is achieved with steel wool, and is about as nice as you can achieve- it's very classy looking, in my...
  5. Re: Help!!! Sanding High Gloss Down to "Satin"

Actually, you would not be giving the instrument a “satin” or “matte” finish. A true satin finish is achieved by adding flatting agents to the finish medium. Usually something like super fine silica...

    I would use these:

  7. Re: Books...and Specifically, Intermediate Books???

    YEET
I got a lot of musical friends and I think it would be awesome to be able to jam with them and musical friends in the future! So I think building that level of fluency is what I'm going for.

  8. Re: Books...and Specifically, Intermediate Books???

I used books a lot, but not instructional books. I used tune books a lot.

Not totally a side bar - I think you might greatly benefit from some of the on line lessons available, Artist Works comes...

Re: Help!!! Sanding High Gloss Down to "Satin"

You shouldn't hurt anything. Start with some 0000 steel wool and see if you like the look. Want more satin get some fine sandpaper. The finish is most likely thick if it is an inexpensive instrument...
  10. Re: Books...and Specifically, Intermediate Books???

I for one totally agree with JonZ's above statements, the ? is whether you want to eventually. join a band, jam, play only at home for pleasure, etc.

    Re: Books...and Specifically, Intermediate Books???

The main thing with The Mandolin Pickers Guide... is to put in the time creating with the tools he gives you until you can do it fluently. Don’t just play his examples and move on.

    The IRealB app...

Re: Balancing practice between two instruments...

^^ This is the takeaway for me. I love playing guitar, but I only do it occasionally these days. But I inevitably find that when i pick it up again, it isn't long before I'm playing better than I...
  13. The long, arduous journey of Silverangel #438 - with a happy end

I am not a mandolin player.

    I play a bit, but it’s a sideline. I play a cheap pressed-top instrument. It’s fine.

I’ve been listening more and more to music with mandolin, and got the bug, and...
  14. Re: Balancing practice between two instruments...

I play several instruments and don't worry about being a master of anything, just enjoying making and learning about music.

I will say that anything I do learning on one instrument ends up...

    Re: Books...and Specifically, Intermediate Books???

You will become a better mandolinist if you complete the Horne book. But, for me, it covers too much material in too little depth. For example, there are two cross picking exercises, which are really...

Bring only enough money for the strings. Leave all credit cards home. Keep your hands in your pockets and look straight ahead not at that wall. Oh, yeah, don't sell your car.

    Re: Shopping! Or...Playing Around

Yeah ….. good advice and descriptive explanations above. A mandolin that will last you two or three decades will cost in the neighborhood of 1,000.00 dollars if you don't stumble onto a real deal....

    Re: Shopping! Or...Playing Around

If you can spend up to $500, get a Kentucky KM 150 or an Eastman MD 305. If you can spend up to $1000, save another $500 or buy a used Kentucky 900 or 950. If you can spend around $1500, the world...

    Re: Shopping! Or...Playing Around

Modern mandolins with arched tops can be very loosely graded by the way the tops and backs are made.

The lowest grade have tops and/or backs made out of laminated wood.
    The next grade up have...
