  1. Re: Seeking music by S. Seth Weeks & other Black mandolinists

    Ditto here.

Christian: I have a mandolin ensemble arrangement of "At a Georgia Camp Meeting," which was recorded by Weeks ... but written by a white composer.

Re: Clark Mandola - a review

Hm. Just had a chance to try out a new Clark mandola here in WA earlier this month ... maybe it was yours? Spectacular instrument.

Re: H 1 mandola on SGW

    $2351.

Well, I've seen H1s listed for more! New owner will have to decide what to do about the pickguard, and perhaps have someone make a new support arm, but this could be a decent mandola at a...
  5. Re: Cleaning & polishing "German silver" on metal-body National

    Silvo instruments don't have cones.

I suppose it's possible that with an outgassing pickguard on an acoustic National, some of the chemicals could get through the soundholes and damage a cone....

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

[Checks Wikipedia] Yes, I see what you mean ... perhaps this seller hopes that some of the guitars' reputation will spill over onto this mandolin. Still, there's no visual evidence that it is any...
  7. Re: Cleaning & polishing "German silver" on metal-body National

Well, the good news is that if the National mandolins are constructed the same way as the guitars, taking them apart shouldn't be too tough. According to this, the only thing holding the neck to the...
  8. Re: Cleaning & polishing "German silver" on metal-body National

Here is a related question: Anyone know if it is practical to replate an old German silver–finished National guitar or mandolin?

I have three old National Silvos with the same problem: they had...

That's just the point, these aren't rare at all. If you can't find another one of these, you're not looking very hard.

Maybe you can't find another one that says "Greco," but there have to be...

    Here's an entertaining one:

"This unique electric mandolin is labeled 1978 and crafted by the renowned Japanese company...
  11. Re: Let's talk about the Stromberg archtop guitar on SGW...

    Ended at $10,778.77.

I wonder if this will surface after it's been restored. There was a 1906 Gibson mandolin on SGW that had essentially been sliced in half by an enormous crack going from the...
  12. Re: got a live one here folks, and he is coming in hot

Ovation MM68 and Godin A8 mandolins both have built-in preamps and I'd be more than happy to defend them as quality instruments.

$1200 was always an insane price to pay for a Michael Kelly...
  13. Re: Let's talk about the Stromberg archtop guitar on SGW...

I dunno ... sometimes they'll list a cheap mandolin with the headstock snapped off or suchlike ... something that clearly isn't worth repairing. When it comes to instruments I am not sure what...

Nice '46 Gibson A style here.

But $25K nice? I doubt it.

  15. Re: Let's talk about the Stromberg archtop guitar on SGW...

Indeed, how could anyone resist a guitar with a strap like that? No wonder it's over $8K.

I see one Stromberg listed on Reverb for $14K, a grade fancier than this one. I have no idea of a fair...

  17. Let's talk about the Stromberg archtop guitar on SGW...

Dire need of a neck reset, looks like — but it shot up to $8501 pretty fast.

  18. Re: got a live one here folks, and he is coming in hot

Sure, but the separation in this case is most likely not cleated, and trying to cleat it by working through the F-holes would be a pain, and quite expensive relative to the value of the instrument....
  19. Re: got a live one here folks, and he is coming in hot

Yeah, it looks cheap and it also looks like the photos were taken in a pawnshop (?). I don't know what other kind of store has a bunch of sneakers on the wall right behind a jewelry display case—and...

Re: Walnut Back and Sides Spruce Flat Top Tone

There are two walnut instruments I've heard that really struck me: an F-style mandola by James Curtis and a tenor guitar by Tim May. As John points out above, though, it's unlikely that wood choice...

It's possible that the flash just happens to be reflected off the serial number area of the label. The number might well be legible from a different angle.
