  1. Re: What price level and up gets you a "lifelong keeper" mandolin

"What price level and up ..."

That could be anywhere from free to sky is the limit. Price paid has less to do with an instrument being a "lifelong keeper" than nearly any other factor, IMO.

Re: Is It Possible to Fake It?

I’ve played rhythm guitar all my life, never lead solos, and when I picked up mandolin I began playing melodies as a beginner and have experimented with “faking it” for solo work in gigs with my...

That looks really good ... I played through one on last Friday night gig and it worked out great. I normally use my loudbox mini and I’m happy with it, but my guitar buddy has one of these and I used...

    Tiny Moore. Johnny Gimble.

Technique for 4 string electric mandolin not much different than electric guitar IMO

Re: Best Wall Hanger For Mandolin

No problem! Actually this comes up here from time to time. There have been lengthy threads about how we choose to store instruments, etc. I’m in the same camp as you, when I lived in a large house, I...

    Re: Beatles tunes

Your ready list is a lot more impressive than mine, Trip. I agree with an earlier suggestion, add Eleanor Rigby, it’s fun on mandolin.

Check out what Tom Wright did with Sun King on his 10 string:...

Re: Is It Possible to Fake It?

If he had written, "Studying music theory, scales, modes etc etc will not [necessarily] make you a good player" - then yeah, maybe there's a point in there. It may be that nothing could make Joe...
  9. Re: recorded tunes for turlough O'carloan music posted on the for

He was the great harpist who left much wonderful music behind. Yes, there are loads of O’Carolan tunes done here, on video and usually with ABC and/or TAB as well as SN. You’ll find them in the Song...

    Re: finish touch up

Adrian is correct, there are a lot of variables to consider. And pro touch-up does not rely on one method, “in America” or elsewhere. French padding, lacquer spot repairs, CA, etc. the list goes on...
  11. Re: Learning The Basics -vs- Being A Slave To The Basics

I understand Doug, I’ve been a teacher, great point. Just want to note that there are different perspectives. Wouldn’t want to judge anybody, especially third hand on an Internet forum, whether...
  12. Re: Question About Classified Price/Sales Tax Etiquette

Questioners often appear foolish and can certainly irritate experts with their foolish questions. We know that people often swallow their questions for fear of appearing foolish.

Sherry, the A major chord mentioned, 2245, the major third is at the 4th fret A string.

Can naphtha damage a nitrocellulose finish? The answer is yes, it can if you are careless with it. If naphtha fumes get trapped for any length of time on a nitrocellulose finish it will indeed damage...

    Re: Palmer mandolin

That mandolin appears to be a carved top and back - I'm no expert, but the laminated, pressed tops I've seen lack the carved ridges at the scroll. In the U.S., $450 is a pretty good deal on a carved...
