Re: Guitar or Upgrade My Mandolin

I'd buy a Tonegard for the mandolin and spend the rest on a guitar. The Tonegard can move to your next mandolin. You'll notice a difference.

    Re: One in, one out

Why not just buy an instrument and keep it for life? There are some that are worthy of this approach.

Nope. Not for me, not now or ever. Drums and mandolins are like oil and water. Just say no!!!:crying:

Re: Reason I Buy Two Buck Chuck !

Well, I have to say: I was perfectly happy with Two Buck Chuck for a good many years -- and especially when I was in grad school, and had a net negative income! Eventually, though, my wine-tasting...

Re: To Pinkie or Not Pinkie is my Question

I've seen this in electric guitar world.

"Why should I work extra hard to learn something? SO-and-so is famous and doesn't play like that"

Basically it's a justification for not practicing...

Re: To use one’s pinkie or not part 2

There is zero benefit from deliberately not using the 4th finger.

Mostly, not using the 4th finger allows one to remain at the level of technical ability they already are.

    The only reason for...

    Re: Brentrup Prices Up?

Hans in in my opinion is way under rated. Not by the people who own one of
his instruments, they all seem to fully realize the rarity of how his mandolins turn out.
No mandolin, I mean no mandolin...

Re: Red Henry demonstrating Monroe Style Manlin'

    OK,

I'm having a hard time trying to understand why this kind of response is "constructive" to the discussion.
Monroe Style Mandolin is a style that is accepted in mandolin circles, has many...
  11. Re: Mandolin more difficult than guitar - cosmic truth!

The mandolin I feel is physically harder to play, but the guitar is harder to learn.you have two more strings to learn than the mandolin, and you can create up to 6 note chord structures on the guitar...

    Re: Playing "Licks"

Jim - I see from another thread that you have Jesper Rubner's mandolin improvisation book. My observation above is from the pentatonic licks in his book. Check it out and you'll see what I mean.

Re: One tip that changed everything

On one of my very first paying gigs, an old timer told me, "NEVER put your beer on top of your amp, always put it on top of somebody else's amp." Very smart advice.

  17. Not much mandolin but, great music history!

Just saw "Muscle Shoals" on Netflix, opens with some mandolin but that's about it.
The rest of the almost two hours is fascinating. Well worth the time invested!

Re: Disappointed in the Loar Mandolins

"Close," hell! It is perfect, the Platonic form of mandolinism…

Makes me wonder why we're wasting all this time and bandwidth discussing irrelevant other brands.

    Viva, Shmergel!

  25. Re: help me pick out which mandolin i will get, pretty please?

If buying used is not an option, I would get a KM-900/950 and play the heck out of it. When/if you need to upgrade further, start looking at some $3-$5K instruments, because that's what you'll need...
