  1. Re: Cleaning oil varnish finish with a French polished shellac

No rash, just the vague 'gunk' I'd like to get off.

I want to make sure I don't damage the finish in any way, so I'm hesitant to try anything.

Bill McCall - the one I have is the twin that Ted...
  2. Re: Cleaning oil varnish finish with a French polished shellac

Sent him an email yesterday and waiting for a response.

Was hoping someone here might have some advice.
  3. Cleaning oil varnish finish with a French polished shellac

Recently purchased a used Austin Clark 2 point that is amazing.

It is, however, a bit 'grungy'.

    I'd like to clean it.

Did the normal 'searches' and what I'm seeing is using a slightly damp...

    Re: Bobelock Case Humidistat

I understand and certainly wouldn't rely on it as a rule. In my music room, I have two humidistats that I'm fine with.

It just annoys me that I have to open the case and see this non-functioning...

    Bobelock Case Humidistat

Bought a mandolin that came with a Bobelock case.

The built in case humidistat doesn't work. Pinned to 80%, which is wrong, and it doesn't waver.

I contacted Bobelock who sent me to Howard Core...

    Re: Leave leather strap on?

The straps are all leather, and I'd like to keep them on all the time. Thanks for the input!

    Leave leather strap on?

Did the usual forum searches before posting this, still a little 'unsettled' on what the right thing to do is.

I have an F style mando and an A style mando. Both wonderful.

    I use all leather...

    Re: Thanks Dennis...The Mandolin Store

Throw my hat into this ring as well. Just purchased a Kimble 2-pt. from Dennis and Brian at THE MANDOLIN STORE. Great service and knowledge. I'll be doing business with them again for sure.
  9. Re: whoa, i like the looks of this 2 point in the classifieds

Okay, I've had it for a day now. I'm not great at describing things like this, so forgive me if it seems a little vague, but these are my impressions of it so far.

FULL. A very full town. When...
  10. Re: whoa, i like the looks of this 2 point in the classifieds

    I certainly will.

Took a trade from my end plus cash to get the deal done. Dennis at the Mandolin Store could not have been nicer or more helpful.

The waiting is the hardest part.
  11. Re: whoa, i like the looks of this 2 point in the classifieds

I did my part by purchasing the first one shown on this thread from Dennis at The Mandolin Store. Should be here tomorrow.

Now somebody else do THEIR part and buy the other one!!

Re: Why/how did you start playing mandolin?

In the mid-70s, I went to a small club in Roslyn, N.Y. called "My Father's Place". Went there a LOT.

Went to see Ry Cooder, because I loved his guitar playing. Really wasn't that familiar with...

    Re: Loose Pickguard

    The toothpick suggestion works.

You can also take Teflon (plumbers) white tape. Stretch a wrap or two around the screw threads and tighten back in. That should snug it up nicely.
  15. Re: Thoughts on Ry Cooder's New Recording - The Prodigal Son

I hear banjo as well when he's singing.

Re: NMD - Girouard Studio F5

There's an "A" for sale in the Classifieds as of today.

If someone is looking, seems like a good deal. NFI, just passing on the info.

    Thanks, all!

This one was completed in March, 2018 and is #171, so there's got to be a bunch of them out there!

I'm not great at describing tone, and it certainly is subjective. That being said, I couldn't be more pleased with the tone, playability, and craftsmanship that this instrument has. For what I was...

    NMD - Girouard Studio F5

I've had it now for a few days. This is part of the email I sent to Max Girouard about this mandolin:
