Re: New mandolin for an old man

Your rental mandolin is most likely not set up well. A well setup mandolin will play easily and most likely after playing this your fingers will thank you and you will be able to play longer, and...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

I have a stand alone phantom, used it for years and works great. Usually only use it for large diaphragm condensers tho.

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

I don't blame you, I thought you took the comment quite well. I was talking to both sides. Just thought I would try to stop something before it got started. Good job all, carry on.

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

Let's stay away from the gender bashing here please.

The folks I play with, some read music, a lot don't. Those that read very rarely bring it out in a jam unless it is something new they have not...

Re: Gibson mandolin hope to find info

My first good mandolin was from this same time frame, it was a very nice sounding mandolin. Nice score, I would gladly play many times over the $5 your friend paid for another.

Re: Anyone know the Tim O'Brien set break rap?

The more you drink the better we sound has been around for decades, at least I remember and have said it for at least 4 decades.

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

I am sure most new equipment, especially a board would have 48v phantom. I use a Carvin Stagemate, it does not have phantom. I play weekly boat cruises and set up a smal 6 channel (new) Peavey, it...

Re: Now what do I do?

While it might look a little different you could keep the same scale, put the nut where it should be according to scale, but leave the remaining fingerboard extend past the nut and possibly inlay...

Explain how you did your dovetail, I don't see were it goes into the body of the guitar.

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

There are plenty of tunes that I can't start, sometimes can, but can play if someone starts or hums the tune. Tunes seem to change slightly from region to region, reading from music I have not see it...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

I use the RedEye, still have my Orchid, but too many places I play either don't have phantom or it is not 48 volts so I don't use it much anymore. Liked it while I used it tho.
  12. Re: (Godin A8) Pickup battery runs out very quickly

Most batteries have a date for expiration. If it is close of past that date it will not last as long. Other than having something plugged in or a change of value of a component on the board,...

    Re: Metallic String Buzz

A customer brought in a guitar that had a buzz that was hard to find. Ended up being the truss rod. Even tho it was tight it buzzed in the neck. Ended up taking out a fret marker in the center of the...

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

I think the simplest way to memorize a tune, not a song, is in a jam. We used to have weekly jams and at first you don't know the tune, next week you have a few more notes. Next year you know several...

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

I am the opposite, I learn by playing with others and all tunes are memorized. Well if the melody is in my head I can play it. A few of us played a two day gig at a school with a caller for kids 1-12...

    Re: eBay sales tax

For decades if you bought something from another state and didn't pay sales tax you are legally supposed to pay use tax, which is the same thing. It has never been enforced, so this is a way to...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

A nice feature offered by Grace. It is only the pizeo pickups that have such a high impedance, that I know of. A magnetic pickup would be nowhere near that. 6K-12K would be more like it. Nice that...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

The pure mini is 1 million ohms. A long ways away from 1 Meg.
  20. Re: Single coil magnetic 'strat' pickup problem uneven amplificat

If you can take the pole piece out completely for the A string that will work as well. A guitar friend of mind takes the pole piece for the B string out of all his guitars and has great balance. He...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

Look at your specs and find input impedance. If it is around 1 million (1Meg) ohms then it will work fine. If it is close either way it will work fine. You may not hear as much difference with a...

Re: Question about Acoustic Amps and PreAmps

A preamp is not to boost the signal from a transducer pickup. The pickup has plenty of power on it's own. It does however have an impedance of 1 million ohms and a PA wants to see somewhere between...
  23. Re: Single coil magnetic 'strat' pickup problem uneven amplificat

Since you don't have pole pieces and I am assuming you don't want to fiddle with an EQ. I would try copper shielding tape on top of the pickup, under just the A string. See if it tames it down, if it...

    Re: Clean picks

Actually the only pick I have ever washed is a BC. It will get slippery from hand oils and washing gives it back the tactile stickiness that I like. The rest of the picks don't get baths.

Re: Bring down humidity in the guitars storage

I am careful and try to keep the humidity to 65%, but if you live in a humid area like I do, unless you play in your controlled environment only, it will get exposed to high levels anyway. Tonight I...
