Nothing to elaborate here Englemann over one piece maple (thanks to Bruce Harvie/Orcus Island Tonewoods), non traditional mostly. I’ll get a sound clip up as soon as I re-learn how to...
rcc56: (Oh, and yes, the pocket knife came way before the poker.)
Being a father of four I kinda wish that happened to me years ago. “The knife before the poker”...:))
Up until now I’ve always did the F holes with a coping saw. This time I decided to get the plate closer to graduation measurements and use the Xacto method described above and I’m pretty pleased...
If I remember correctly, I think the idea of cutting the 6 degrees into the neck block was to allow further in-set of the bottom of the neck heel providing a bit more meat for dowel inserts.
I swear you fellows are so full of it that y’all miss the obvious. The mandolin induced this upon itself in an effort to “Open up”....sheesh
I’ve only built 8 mandolins so far but I’ll tell you what I’ve got. A cheap, used bench table saw, band saw, bench drill press. Bought a new dremel, stew Mac binding cutter, thumb plane, and small...
Nice job! Better than my first for sure. I carved the top to thin and it eventually collapsed lol. Happy addiction bro
It seems like the rod needs to be bent further down then curved. Could be just the way the pic looks. I’m reminiscing siminoff blueprint here, I usually lay the rod on top of the print for comparison.
So I was recently thinking on ordering a cheap mando for kids to learn on and remembered something about a Walmart clearance on the cafe and see that the sale is way past over with lol. So I was...
Yeah that superbly nice piece of wood probably just isn’t going to do you well at all. You might as well just send it to me

I hope Bob is well pleased, I know I would be! Beautiful Mandolin Mr. Condino very unique. Two thumbs up!
I use those to screw the plate down to the work bench and carve inside contour, then turn The plate over and do the same for outside rough carving
Nice! Congrats Br1ck
Fscotte, I personally think you should consider building a fiddle instead of a violin
The Siminoff books, this CAFE, and Arches graduation maps have been very useful resources for me.
Agreed Fscotte, and the way you achieve good relationship between plates is by deflection tuning, correct? Would it be reasonable to say that tap tuning could achieve the same goal when one learns...

There’s a lot of threads on this subject. This one for example that I’ve saved. Let us know what camp ya join...
Larry my experience is limited but I’ll share my findings thus far. I’ve got both Siminoff books and he says to tune the bass tone bar to Ab and Treble bar to A#. I was always confused and could...

I used iron acetate on the walnut veneer on the headstock of this mandolin. Can’t say that I particularly like the grain pores but it was ok I guess. I’ll be using ebony on the next
Excellent Lappy thanks for sharing

This little fellow came later in life for me. Looks like he has an interest already at four months old lol:mandosmiley:
Post your baby (or grand baby) Mandolin pics
After watching the vids, I wish I would’ve invested in the Holey Galahad instead of this thing now. It still helps with rough carving but looks like the Holey Galahad would’ve been better

Kinda pricey but I may have to indulge some day
