Re: Keep Rigel or learn on different instrument?

I would not rush to thin the neck - a lot of people find slightly thicker necks more comfortable [I did at first]. Hand size should not be a limitation at all, unless coupled with poor technique.

Re: Another source for Backup Tracks

We have a lot of great options.

I use Strum Machine a lot. It is a relatively cheap subscription for something I use daily. I like it as it's simple to adjust how many times through you play...

Pretty happy with my Zoom Q2n camera. needs decent light but onboard mics are great or it takes a soundboard feed.

    Re: I Miss Playing Live!

I miss it terribly. I go to a wonderful weekly jam where there are a lot of great listeners [as well as players], it's going to be a while.

I play a couple times a month and practice at least once...

    Re: Collings MT2 vs MF-GT?

Yes. Mine is billed as `Italian'. It's really something, esp now that it's been properly broken in.

    Re: Collings MT2 vs MF-GT?

Not sure about the MF vs MT2 but I bought a used MT2 a year ago and absolutely love it.

Significantly better than the new MTs locally IMO, esp in the upper registers.

Tried it out at the same...

Re: Need Advice on Selling/Upgrading Mandolin

I hear you loud and clear, I signed one of those last year lol

I would have told you to watch the classifieds here at this time of year [right before/after taxes] as there's a fair amount of good...

    Re: Shout out to Collings

    Bought a 2017 MT2 Italian used a year ago.

It had so much volume and cut, seemed a little sharp but it played like butter and my wife said it was 'all that and a bag of chips'.

    Fast forward a...

    Re: Social Distancing

I never knew Salt Spring was disliked, have never heard anyone say a thing about it.

    News to me.

Given all the TP is being hoarded, if I run out I don't think I'll have an issue keeping people...

Re: Gigs Cancelled - Health and Safety

I think it is time to close this thread as we have clearly wandered into politics.

I don't care if people pretend to be experts about mandolins here, but the people posting medical claims and now...

Re: Gigs Cancelled - Health and Safety

Statements of fact about the future are never wise IME, especially when the data is far from settled.

I'd rather be careful and wrong than ignore it and be wrong.

Given it's about to be spring...

    Re: Play better when alone

While you can play on the street with a case open in front of you, I would start by finding a nice sunny park bench on a nice day and play for yourself there. Have a short list of 5-8 songs you're...
  13. Re: If your spouse just green-lighted an electric mando ...

Because then you can bend strings, use a wider variety of pedals for electric guitars.

I have an 8 string electric and while I enjoy it, it's not that much different than my acoustic mandolin with...

    Re: Strap Button Recommendations

My Breedlove got a strap button that was what the local luthier had in stock. It's black and metal, not exciting but it works just great.

For my Collings I got a wood one and provided that the...

    Re: Subscription Tutorial Sites

I really enjoyed my time with Peghead - I found myself switching instructors every 3 or 4 weeks and thus in a couple months I went through the instructors and lessons I was most interested in and had...
  16. Re: Book/s on how to improvise on Old Time tunes???

Really well done advice, Mike. These two stick out to me as I have learned these again and again - and this is actively something I practice.

Keeping with Red Haired Boy, I've woodshedded that...

Because a lot of people pick over that region [it does sound less bright than by the bridge] - scalloping helps avoid having the pick click from contacting fretboard.

Re: Help with EQ'ing K&K mandolin pickup

I know you don't want to spend money, and I know the K+K is cheaper ... but I wasn't that happy with the K+K pre....

Re: What strings are you currently playing?

I generally run with J74's but trying the D'A Monels this time around on my MT2.

About a month into them and really like them - I feel like they never gave that initial `bright' week that J74's...

Re: collecting and playing mandolins ?

In the last year I picked up an electric...

Re: Any new pedals for multi-instrumentalists?

The Zoom A1X Four that came out last fall seems like it would do the trick for you, I have been very impressed with it.

  22. Re: Celebrating The Mandolin Pickers Guide to Bluegrass Improvisa

  23. Re: Sound: opinions sought on technique vs instrument, i.e. anti-

I find most budget level mandolins sound pretty thin and sharp in the upper registers of the A and esp E courses.

Perhaps godlike technique can correct that, but I would say above the 8 or 9th...
