  1. Re: Truss rod: Too tight? And still a string-ward bow.

My understanding is the frets themselves normally cause a bit of a back-bow. Martin used to correct string side bows by using larger fret tangs on a refret. Since your neck was Ok before you...

    Re: Roadie-2 Tuner and Winder

I wouldn't want the extra mass of a winder on the peg head if I leave the tuner on,as I sometimes do. If the $130 price is correct, that is absurd. Take a twenty dollar device and a five dollar...
  3. Re: Considering applying a compound radius to my One And Only

Putting a radius on a fretboard involves pulling the frets, sanding the radius and re-installing the frets with a level, crown, etc. A compound radius is the same except it is more complicated to...
  4. Re: From "an antique store", Kay? Sears? Silvertone? Thanks

Not any Kay or Silvertone I have ever seen. More knowledgeable folks will be along shortly. Btw,your Ibanez not staying in tune between uses is not indicative of a collapsing top. It is normal.

    Only a little.
  6. Re: anyone change their plain steel high strings faster than wrap

My thought has always been that wound strings get dirt and oils stuck between the wingdings and thus need to be changed more often. On upright bass strings, which cost a lot more than mandolin...

    Re: String angle over bridge

I would b an interesting experiment to make a tailpiece that let you vary the angle and see what the results were.

    Re: Issues with converted mandocello

Not my mandocello. I suggested the OP check on the straightness of the neck.

    Re: Issues with converted mandocello

A couple of thoughts: Have you checked with a straight edge that the neck actually is bowed. It is hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like the neck angle is bad. Kay instruments are...

    Re: Repair question

Yes it can be repaired. As Sunburst inferred, the cost of the repair may well be more than the value of the instrument. If you are thinking of trying it yourself, more information would be helpful....

Re: What Do You Think About This Unique 1 Pc. Back?

I would be cautious about the stability of that wood.

Re: Shipping from Japan to USA?

Given all the uncertainties, you may want to consider asking the luthier to hold on to it until you have shipping you trust.

Re: "Playing the circle of fifths"

In addition to lots of songs moving in fifths (or fourths), I find practicing scales in the like in the order of the circle to be useful.

Also there are interesting historical reasons why we...

    Re: Gibson Mandola Restoration

My understanding is Gibson did overspray some older instruments when they were brought to them for repair. This may be one.

Re: KM200S Setup / Bridge Height

This is coming from my background in the upright bass world. If you take material off where the post screws in you are leaving less wood for the post, making it more likely to bend or fail. I know...

  21. Re: No mandolin content. Taylor Guitars story about sourcing wood

I am not sure what species "Mexican Ash? is. I lived in Southern California in the 90's and don't remember seeing ash trees as sidewalk trees. What I do remember is Jacaranda, which is a species of...

  23. Re: No mandolin content. Taylor Guitars story about sourcing wood

I am all for alternative woods but the article was poorly done. For instance they say guitarists are conservative and give Gibson's self tuning guitar debacle as an example. They didn't fail due to...

    Re: Instrument Case Stand

This is great. A word of caution: If you are using it for instruments, not just cases, check that the padding (pipe insulation etc) isn't vinyl. Vinyl can damage some finishes, nitrocellulose in...

Re: Practice cutting dovetails by hand

I used to go to a beach in Puerto Rico. The directions were turn at the first left after where the horse is tethered then look for an orange juice can in the bush. Go on that path. It worked.
