Re: nut height for an octave mandolin

    Hi,

yes plenty of trees in your part of the world. There are different varieties of Maple so you may have to do some research as to which is best for the job.

Re: nut height for an octave mandolin

I think Maple is the best bet. Fender use it on electrics and it looks very nice.

It's got a strong modern neck with a trussrod now but I'll follow your advice, lighten up the G and D and see how it sounds. Thanks for the information.

Re: Nylon strings on a Banjo Mandolin

Thanks Bob. I've gone back to a 10 on the E and tightened the skin and it sounds better. I might even risk putting some more strings on one day. Doubling up the A and E would balance the sound a bit...

Nylon strings on a Banjo Mandolin

I've just put a modern neck on a 20's Banjolin which was really hard to play & tune. Also given it a modern skin.

I've set it up for four strings at the moment.

The strings I have on are...

Triolian Mandolin needs a case. Any ideas ?

It lives in a Mandola gig bag at the moment but a hard case would be great. Did anyone ever find a case that fits ?

    Re: Collings @ Auction (UK)

My guess is that someone stripped the varnish to make it sound better & applied stain - which didn't sink in evenly as they didn't get all the varnish off. Probably put French polish over the top. It...

I switched from Octave to Tenor Banjo. The stretches are the same but it's much easier to press the string down.

Re: Chechen wood for back and sides?

If that’s Sheesham Wood, it’s a variety of Indian Rosewood & generally used for furniture. We’ve seen them using it to build beach shacks in Goa so it must be fairly plentiful.
