Re: Practicing Bach during the lockdown

    Beautiful.

I'm splitting my time between the Bach Prelude and a Vivaldi movement.

    Re: Recommendation for an electric?

I've got an Eastwood Airline Mandola. Low price high quality.

    The mandos look very tempting.

    Re: Hora Octave Mandolas

I have to push down harder than I would like to get a clean (buzz free) note.
    Nothing wrong with the setup.

I'm older now and don't want to fight with my instruments.

A friend of mine plays it...
  6. Re: So... They seem to think I'm starving and homeless?

    FWIW

I'm wrapping up the busking season here in NYC (man it's cold).
I started in May and did it 2 or 3 times a week for the last 7 months.

I learned a lot also (as Chris Calley above said)....

    Re: I've Got A Feeling

According to my bathroom scale 3.2 lbs

It lighter than my Eastwood E Mandola & heavier than my Epiphone MM-30 mandolin.

It's has a solid feel to it.
  8. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

Mandolin never happened for me even after years of trying.
Mandola is just perfect in every way.

A non musician woman a few weeks ago asked me why my mandolin had a deeper voice.
    It was nice to...

Re: In praise of solid body mandolins.

I've been busking with mine all summer and yeah the reaction has been enthusiastic to my tiny guitar.
  10. Re: A likely contentious opinion on electric mandolins

My EDola has a very "woody" sound to it through a Blackstar amp and some eq.

It's really unique. Not like a guitar at all.
  11. Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.

    I love Brooklyn.
There is no place like it.
It's so not like Manhattan yet close by.

    Re: Who doesn't memorize tunes/songs?

Always sheet music for me unless I'm performing.
Then I memorize for that performance and it's out of my head the next day.
If I ever perform more I'll have to change that, but in the meantime my...

FWIW I pass by that address very often.

Nice to know what was there.

Old NY is still there just under the surface if you look for it.

    Re: Soft Picks ?

Don't get the rubber picks IMO.
I have some in various thickness and they are very harsh.
    Don't know why.

Pro Plec is a nice choice.

The Grolsch washers work great. But Fender sells a similar product.

    Same thing and pretty cheap.

Re: What plectra for the mandole?

Shape doesn't matter much to me.
    But mine are: D'Andrea PRO-346

Don't know about those other numbers.

After many changes of mind I think D'Andrea Pro Plec 1.5mm give me the woody dark sound I like.
Their cheap enough to just give it a try.

The foam cost more than the case.

    Re: Go Deeper, Not Wider

    All in all good advice.

But getting to the correct "width" is very subjective.
    It would vary for everyone.

    Re: Resisting the "Iron Maiden"

    Same here.
I have very little patience with musicians who never use a metronome.

My long gone violin teacher would come back from the dead and kick my ass if I stopped using one.

They are easy and sound really good.
    Hope that helps.
